In 1907, NM was still only a Territory in the United States. Lordsburg, NM, the small town that would eventually be known as the state’s “Bootheel,” opened the doors of First National Bank of Lordsburg. This endeavor was led by 14 investors. During the Depression, many banks closed their doors for good and First National Bank of Lordsburg was the only bank in the region. During this period, many people tried to deal in cash as much as possible but checks were still common. With the absence of an operating bank, Howell Drug Store in Silver City (the building that is now Little Toad Creek at 200 N. Bullard) became a collection point for banking business. “Transactions” were then shuttled to Lordsburg for processing. Eventually banks in the region reopened, but the services offered by the bank helped solidify a reputation that still exists today. In 1982, the bank changed its name to Western Bank.

We understand the challenges and opportunities in rural southwest New Mexico and southeast Arizona because we were built here. That is what makes us stand out from our competitors. Over the past 22 years, Western Bank’s Bootheel Foundation has funded in excess of $548,000 in scholarships and donations to community efforts and students in Southwest New Mexico and Southeast Arizona. The mission is to provide funding to community projects and scholarship awards in the areas serviced by Western Bank. Every employee, director, and officer of Western Bank contributes to Bootheel Foundation to support this mission.

The Martin family has three generations of leadership at Western Bank. They believe to support community youth is to invest in the future and they believe in the value of education. Their commitment is illustrated through the Scholarship Program. Western Bank also has a “Levi Fund” that is funded directly by employees to assist fellow employees and customers during times of need. Examples are everything from assisting with funeral expenses to helping pay for a new set of teeth.
