✨Happy International Cat Day from Hawk Creek Wildlife Center!✨
We're celebrating with some of our favorite fantastic feline fun facts!
🐈There are over forty species worldwide! Seven wildcats are considered "big", like lions or tigers, while the other 33 make up the "small" wildcats!
🐈All wildcats are all in the family Felidae, but there's one member of the Felidae who isn't- the Domestic Cat, Felus Catus. Although domestic cats generally dislike water, many species of wildcats love going for swims, like River the Fishing Cat!
🐈Although they are small (and downright adorable!), the Black-Footed Cat is one of the deadliest predators in the world, sporting a hunting success rate of over 60%, compared to the modest 25% of some of the large wildcats!
✨We're celebrating International Clouded Leopard Day with Calypso!✨
Meet Calypso, the Clouded Leopard! Calypso joined Hawk Creek's team of wildlife educational ambassadors in 2023. With her incredible coat and playful nature, Calypso is more than just a stunning wildcat; she plays a crucial role in our mission to educate and inspire!
Calypso helps shine a light on the plight of jungle-dwelling animals like the Clouded Leopard, and the devastating impact of habitat loss and how we affect that every day, even from half way across the globe! Unfortunately, an extremely common ingredient in a huge amount of products like snacks, desserts, and toiletries called palm oil is causing the jungles where animals like the Clouded Leopard live to be torn down for it's production.
Calypso helps to educate people on how we affect animals around the globe every day with our small choices by doing what she does best- being herself! Calypso is full of energy, and loves pouncing, climbing, and running through her habitat at Hawk Creek. Her playful antics delight guests, and allow them to see one of these incredible cats up close.
Palm oil is a big threat to animals like Calypso, but it's a problem that together we can solve! By choosing products made with sustainably sourced palm oil, we can assure that Calypso's wild counterparts have a home for generations to come! For these incredible animals, every small action counts in making a big difference, and it all starts with education.
