In honor of Women’s History Month the CCS Department would like to recognize an important person who has helped our community. Sofia Mendoza was an activist and social organizer in San Jose. Her work focused on issues around education, police brutality, healthcare, and housing in East San Jose. One of her greatest accomplishments was the organization of one of the first documented walkouts by Mexican American students at Roosevelt Junior High School, on April 29, 1968. She also took part in co-founding the United People Arriba organization as well as the Community Alert Patrol (CAP) in East San Jose.
