This book's title seems de signed for a film scenario —but for whom? Pat O'Brien and Bing Crosby are too old. “Ac tion Priest” is indeed what Fa ther Joe Lauro almost always seemed to be, judging by the look he affords us of the ex terior of his disciplined life. A plethora of anecdotes, some half‐funny in a passe “religious joke” sense, maddeningly ob scure the inner feelings of the man. There are only tantalizing, brief, abruptly terminated glimpses of his loneliness, doubts, pride, tenderness and introspection. Thus we never fully know this heroic man whose life continued to grow in surprising ways.

The first part of the book re counts how a cantankerous, tin forgiving priest kept young Joe Lauro out of seminary for many years. This treatment is sym pathetic and lacking in bitter ness. Next comes a distracting ly long narrative of Lauro's ex periences as a bomber pilot in World War H. As socio religious history, this memoir is fascinating. For it concerns an explicitly devout Catholic young man‐in‐combat who feels that his Sacred Heart medal promotes the safety of his crew, drops bombs on Germans but makes an act of contrition as he falls asleep thumbing his rosary for the innocent.

After his ordination, Father Lauro is in Arkansas. He is a professionally capable priest. “St. Anne's was dedicated next morning, November 15, 1958 It had cost $60,000, raised by various contributors, and was completely debt‐free. Seth Green, one of my contractors, said he couldn't have built it for less than $120,000.” Also: “The convent was finished in November. It had cost $17,026 and was worth $35,000.” And: “I got the statue for $175, plus delivery.” But these were civil rights years. One looks in vain for the priest's relationship with the liberation cause of black people. There is only a pater nalistic reference to “a ten‐year‐old colored boy” and a subsequent statement in a ser mon about “Christmas baskets among the colored poor.” The world revolution shaking the church does not seem to cause a tremor in Father Lauro.
