This is why we do it!

Hello! My name is Zhenya, and I’m in Arlington, Texas! I grew up in an orphanage in the former Soviet Union. We didn’t have showers or bathtubs in the orphanage—we would drive in a school bus to shower once a month. One bar of soap was shared between 30 other kids. When I was 12, on Easter morning, I received a shoebox gift which was wrapped in blue Christmas paper. I had never received a gift like that before!! Best of all, in the corner of my box, I found a bar of Irish Spring soap. My very OWN bar of soap. To this day I still remember the way it smelled. I hid it right away. Eventually, showers were built in the orphanage, and I finally used my new soap—over a year after I received my shoebox. Looking back, I realize that my shoebox gave me a sense of hope. It showed me that someone really cared enough to pack this gift and send it to me. Once I learned about Operation Christmas Child, I immediately began packing shoeboxes for other children. I saw how people lovingly poured out their hearts in the shoeboxes, and it strengthened my faith to see the hands of Christ at work. Every one of the boxes I pack contains a bar of scented soap just like the one I received. I want the child to experience what I experienced. I also want them to know there’s someone who cares for them. Most of all, I want them to know God loves them. That’s why ! And you should too!

PS - Shoebox gifts are due NEXT WEEK...drop-off locations open Nov. 14 and close Nov. 21. Don't wait until it's too late to pack a shoebox!!
