so, what IS goth anyway?

goth is a subculture that was born from the punk movement. in this way, both groups share similarities when it comes to ideologies and political standpoints. you will also see some style element crossovers, however each group does have their own distinct and unique styles.
the gothic movement and subculture is based on a few different principles:
gothic architecture, gothic literature, gothic music, gothic fashion, and leftist political standpoints. another thing associated with a lot of goths is a love for the dark, spooky, or macabre. when it comes to decor and interests.

the subculture is open to anyone, however, some gatekeeping is necessary, because you can't be goth without a few major elements in place. firstly, you cannot be goth if you aren't a political leftist. this includes being anti racist, pro LGBTQ+, etc. so no homophobes, trump supporters, or anti semites allowed.

another hallmark of the subculture is the music. You have to enjoy gothic music in some form, of which there are many subgenres to choose from, which include gothic rock; think the cure and siouxsie and the banshees, ethereal wave, like cocteau twins and dead can dance, and darkwave, such as she past away, or lebanon hanover.

since the subculture was founded on elements of gothic architecture and literature, a love for one or both of those is fairly important as well, and I personally would also add gothic cinema to that list as well.

as far as the fashion element goes, that part is up to you. there's a huge pressure within the online goth communities to look 'as goth as possible' constantly, or that only people who do full trad goth getups and makeup every day are valid. this, obviously is not true, and is such an unrealistic expectation.

beyond the internet, the goth community in the real world is much more accepting. you can dress however you feel comfortable and whatever is within your means.

speaking of fashion, another big part of goth is DIY. you don't have to spend hundreds of dollars on these "goth brands" to have cool clothes. brands like that didn't exist back in the 80s, and goths used what they had to create their own unique outfits. cut something up, splash some bleach on it, add some safety pins or grommets to a basic black tee. thrift as much as you can, and even if something might not look goth off the cuff, black RIT fabric dye is your best friend.

i also personally recommend getting your black basics from somewhere more affordable and accessible, such as walmart, target, kohl's, or even amazon. not everyone has the ability to always choose the more sustainable option, whether it be budget, or accessibility, and that's okay. i like to save $ for big ticket items like shoes and jewelry/accessories from small businesses.
