✨ If you've ever been to a New Phil concert, then you've likely heard our faithful viola section member, Bernhard Metzger, who's also a founding member of the orchestra. This Newton local has been making beautiful music since 1971, recently transitioning from crunching codes to crafting compositions full time. His new work "Ramblings" will premiere during our upcoming concerts THIS WEEKEND!

✨Bernhard Metzger has been a computer programmer since 1972 working in that industry for 40 years. He started violin in 1971 and took up the viola in 1974 with Jerome Lipson of the Boston Symphony and has played in community orchestras since 1975 including the NPO since its inception. A harmonization exercise led to "Ramblings" for piano which was recorded and performed by Jonathan Bass, Professor of Piano at Boston Conservatory at Berklee and used for a fundraiser for the MGH FTD research unit.

✨"Ramblings", a four-movement piece, is a heartfelt expression of the "Feelings and Emotions" experienced during the FTD (Frontotemporal Dementia) journey, and it was created by Metzger in memory of his wife, Karen Zander. It's a rollercoaster of emotions - confusion, anger, frustration, and sadness. Despite the pain and suffering, the music uncovers moments of humor, joy, and calm. Listen to the first notes of "Karen’s Theme" and sense the depth of love and care infused into this moving composition.

Meet our soloist for our upcoming Classics II program: baritone Philip Lima!

Mr. Lima has regularly garnered critical acclaim for his performances on both concert and operatic stages: “His singing was glorious” (The Boston Globe) – “vibrant baritone and a commanding presence” (Cleveland The Plain Dealer) – “keen musicianship along with total dramatic intention.” (Opera News Online).

He has sung leading operatic roles for the international Kurt Weill Festival in Germany, numerous regional American opera companies, and the Handel & Haydn Society. Mr. Lima has appeared as soloist with the Boston Pops and over seventy orchestras, choral societies, and concert series across the United States and in Korea and Ukraine. He has been acclaimed for his performances with numerous orchestras—including the Boston Pops—of Lee Hoiby’s setting of the “I Have a Dream” speech of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., featured on our Classics II program; and is featured on the recording of pioneering African-American composer Florence Price’s Abraham Lincoln Walks at Midnight that won the 2020 American Prize for the Performance of American Music.

As a solo recitalist, Mr. Lima debuted in Rome with a concert of spirituals in 2000, and has performed frequently at Boston’s historic Jordan Hall. His performance of Schubert’s Winterreise with pianist Beverly Orlove was cited by The Boston Phoenix in an annual summary of Boston’s “Unforgettable Classical Events.”

A native of New Bedford, Massachusetts and an alumnus of Yale University, Mr. Lima studied at the Tanglewood Music Center and Boston University, and with Richard Conrad; and is the Assistant Chair of Berklee College of Music’s Voice Department.
