Who We Are?
OUR MISSION: Fostering a safe place for the LGBTQ+ community in Lake County, through advocacy, compassion, education, and services.
LGBTQ+ Allies Lake County is a grass roots response, to an over whelming need of resources in every facet for the LGBTQ+ community. Our passion and drive to try to close this gap is immeasurable. We see the people in our community losing because of drugs, violence, and su***de. LGBTQ+ Allies Lake County answers the need for access to support services and resources. They should not have to find some underground network of people because everyone is afraid to be known. This is unacceptable in 2019. Everyday that goes by, more lives are lost.
We live and work in Lake County. Like many others in this community, we have had to hide the fact that we are le****ns. We are risking a lot to stand out and say this out loud. We have children that may be ridiculed, family members that may take the brunt of our choice to speak up. The change must start with one person, we want to be that person that says, “it’s time for change”. Many individuals are still hiding. They are afraid of losing their housing, children, and jobs. We know gay and le***an individuals who are married, and still hiding the fact that they are married. Currently there are no laws on the books that protect the LGBTQ+ community from discrimination, there it is a huge misconception that there is. In January 2019, Cuyahoga County became the first county in Northeast Ohio to pass a non-discrimination ordinance.
Education and advocacy must be the driving force behind any change. Without it there are to many misconceptions, second-hand information, or just plain old lack of knowing. We are not trying to change anyone’s beliefs, what we are trying to do is make every life matter. After getting involved with the LGBT Community Center of Greater Cleveland, we understood how great that need is. We had to go to Cleveland to find any agency that had extensive knowledge and resources, or that had any staff devoted exclusively to the needs of the LGBTQ+ community. At this time, when Lake County residents are in need of any resources in the LGBTQ+ community, they are most likely referred to The LGBT Community Center in Cleveland. This should not be a luxury, it should be the norm in every community, including Lake County. Why has this gone unnoticed for so long?
