Trauma (of any kind) is often accompanied and complicated by feeling misunderstood… because others don’t have all the facts.
Sometimes we remain misunderstood in our trauma because we can’t bear reliving a painful experience in order to share all of the facts. Sometimes we may try to protect others from the pain of hearing the facts. And, sometimes it’s simply because we can’t control rumors, or the public and media reports of misinformation.
Those in WNC are feeling misunderstood… because they can’t bear to share what their eyes have seen. Because they want to protect others from their trauma. And because the official and media reports minimize things (like a death toll that locals know is far from accurate).
If you are feeling misunderstood today, it may help you to share a fact with someone you trust. And don’t ever forget that God sees all, knows all, and in Him you are never misunderstood.
Fully seen. Fully known. Fully loved.
Our team is committed to being theologically sound and clinically sharp. Our counselors are also clinically trained and state licensed or provisionally licensed. As such, we are well equipped to, and love working with individuals from all faith and philosophical perspectives.

A trauma-informed WNC Halloween:
Our kids need us to leave behind the scary masks, startling antics, and scary noises tomorrow. They don’t need more reasons to be anxious or triggered. Focus on smiling at them, playing soft and soothing music on your porch, loving on them with gentleness and an appropriate hug, and allowing them a pocket of fun and safety vs a pocket of terror.
Kevin and Donna were so honored to spend time with the AdventHealth Leaders from Henderson and Polk counties today, focusing on healing from the trauma of Helene. This is a special bunch of people and we are grateful to serve them as they serve our communities in “extending the healing ministry of Christ”.
Life can be tough, but you don't have to navigate it alone.
At Summit Wellness Centers, we believe in finding joy even in the midst of challenges. Kristen Martin, a Licensed Clinical Social Worker along with other counselors and therapists at Summit, work with individuals and families to overcome obstacles and discover a renewed sense of hope and purpose. Let's find joy together.

Free & priceless. As many of you know, we had the privilege of hosting Daystar Counseling Ministries in this past week. They had a lot of heart warming and redemptive conversations with many of our kids & parents. They were a gift to us.
They charged nothing. They gave of their time, energy, & expertise. Their presence and processing with me was invaluable, because I didn’t realize how much I needed them too. I saw them laugh, play, and process with my friends & my family. I heard stories of the faith, resiliency, & fortitude of our people. We sat around tables together, my wife, my teenagers, old friends and new, and it felt like we had all known one another forever.
They charged us nothing. It was free. And it was priceless.
Thank you Daystar.

A couple of weeks ago, I mentioned writing truth on the arms of your children to help them battle the trauma of Helene. It’s a mental health coping skill!
Dwell Differently stepped up and sent me thousands of tempory tattoos, just like the one pictured below. I’ll be sharing these across WNC, because when we have truth constantly coming toward us, we really do dwell differently! (And there is neuroscience support for that statement!)
We are so grateful for the faith partners from all over the country who have stepped in with their unique contributions to support our hurting WNC region!
*the tattoo pictured below is Hebrews 10:35… follow the first letter of each word of the verse… before you know it the verse is written in your mind. If it’s written in your mind, it shifts your emotions and your responses.
“Bounce Back” - that’s what they say.
But there is no bounce back following tragedy like we see in WNC, and I find the language to even be deceiving and harmful. We aren’t a rubber band that snaps back following an unthinkable trial of life.
Resilience is not given. Resilience is earned as we move through the suffering, using the coping skills that allow us to survive the raw, messy process vs the coping skills that numb us, keep us stuck, and arrest our development.
Bounce Forward is the language we must use, starting now… because we’re less like a rubber band and more like a bouncy ball that is thrown to the ground and disfigured, only to bounce forward, different, but stronger.
I’ve spent much of the last three decades walking brave individuals through unthinkable trauma and horror, and I’ve witnessed what true resilience is… and what it isn’t. I’ve written about it. I’ve spoken about it. I’ve attempted to live it myself.
We are at a pivotal point in WNC, and our Summit Wellness Centers team is committed to equipping those within our sphere of influence in Bouncing Forward. Pray for us as we strategize creative ways to accomplish this calling.
There is Hope. There is healing. It’s gonna be messy, raw, and sometimes ugly. It’s gonna take some time. As a region, we’re already building some survival muscles we never knew we needed.
And one day, we’ll also notice some thriving muscles we never knew were possible.
Grateful for our local radio stations during Helene, providing a source of information and encouragement. Here’s a conversation shared with Doc last week as we explored how to have mental health resilience in the face of such devastation.
