Rare 1973 Muhammad Ali Vs. Ken Norton II Salt Palace Boxing Poster
Considering Ali never fought in Utah (besides a few sparring rounds before the Rumble in the Jungle fight), advertisements with Ali and a Utah location are very scarce. This fight in particular actually took place in Inglewood, California. It was televised live at the Salt Palace in Salt Lake at a time when not everyone had a home television and PPV was just getting started. This meant that for the majority to see the action live, they would have to pay for a ticket at a live screening. This was the second fight of three between these two. Ali had not only lost the first fight, but had dislocated his jaw during that match. The second fight, later titled "The Revenge", Ali won by a close decision. Funny enough, this poster was displayed advertising ticket sales in an antique shop, and 50 years later has ended back up in one. Measures 17"x22".

1920's Idaho Road Sign
Very unusual directional road sign from Idaho. Based on the locations, I believe this came out of Bliss. Sign is made of thick steel and the letters attached instead of cast, likely via lead. At one point in its past the "T" in Twin Falls came off and was reattached by drilling holes in the back and then welded. It's obviously been repainted somewhat recently but it's age still very much shows through. Restored signs are never preferred but at least someone did a decent job and the paint could easily be stripped. My best guess is that this was a sign produced by an automotive club back in the 20's/30's. Auto clubs were pioneers for roadway markers. Before the government took over highway maintenance, auto clubs regularly fixed roads and put up signs for its members and other travelers to assist with directions. These signs were often regulated by the clubs, but it's not hard to imagine that more rural areas such as this would have made do with what they had. Measures 17"x30.5"

1927-1931 Unpublished Utah Sports Glass Negatives with Multiple Photos of Babe Ruth
Incredible set of local sports history. This is the first time these photos have ever been shown publicly and were found in their original box. Babe Ruth visited Utah for a week in 1927, the final stop of his several month publicity tour before heading to California to film "Babe Comes Home". This set of 16 glass slides contains 3 of Ruth arriving in Salt Lake. One getting off the train, one at the train station, and one getting into a car. In the bowling photos, a 1931 calendar can be seen with Henagers Business College on it (later Steven Henagers). We assume all of these photos were taken in Utah, especially with another photo having the Wasatch Mountains in the background. Photos have been reversed for viewing, they are negetives.

Rare 1899 M. J. Brandenstein (MJB) Coffee Tin Bin
Early and ornate coffee container from San Francisco based company, MJB. Max J. Brandenstein was the son of German Jewish To***co Wholesaler, Joseph Brandenstein, a man like many that migrated to California in 1850 in search of gold during the rush. Max started brewing coffee in 1881 and by 1899, founded his business importing teas, spices, & coffee under his name with the assistance of his three brothers. To subdue sibling rivalry and to better disguise their family origins with rising conflicts in Europe, the company's name was shortened to MJB just after establishment. Almost nothing has survived with the company's full name on it today, and it's fair to assume this is the only tin of its kind out there. It's has a some minor scratches and dents, but is in remarkable shape considering it's size and age. Most turn of the century tins feature all hand painted graphics. This one features painted lettering, but also has ornate (likely lead) trim pieces that are screwed in place. Measures approx 20" tall, 20" deep, and 16" wide.

The Merchants Biscuit Company "Pikes Peak" Tin
Wonderful large and early tin from the long since gone Denver based company. The business was founded in 1906 and trademarked the word "Supreme" in 1916 which they used on all their advertising thereafter. This likely dates it sometime between those dates. What's extra special about this one is that the flavor, whether it was biscuit crackers, cookies, or cakes, is "Pike's Peak", a famous Colorado mountain that would later become known by most automotive enthusiasts for its time trial road and testing grounds. Measures approx 20" tall and 16" in diameter.

Original 1932 South of the Rio Grande Half Sheet Movie Poster
Extremely rare poster, possibly the only known copy to exist! Artwork features the best image of cowboy star, Buck Jones. Two different styles of this poster were produced in 1/2 sheet size, this being the more desirable. It features the same artwork as the one sheet, a poster that usually brings 5 figures in price on the few times it's come up for auction. As standard with most 1/2sh posters, it is printed on cardstock. It was in good condition prior to restoration, but has since been paperbacked and brought back to mint, properly preserving it for many years to come. Measures approx 22"x28".

1920's/30's Buster Brown Shoes Sign
Reverse painted glass, double sided sign with wood frame and a bulb lit metal can. Never seen another quite like it. Back panel says "Brown Bilt Shoes" but is heavily flaked, it clearly saw more sun in its life. Front side is also flaking but in the best way possible with an absolutely killer patina. Found under the floorboards of a home in rural Northern Utah. It was covered in dirt and took nearly 3 hours of cleaning inside and out to get it as pictured. No touch ups or restoration. Measures approx 48"x22".

We've been busy all day packing up for Acorns Antique & Vintage Show this weekend. Given the holiday, I thought this would be a fun one to share. 1930's cast aluminum ambulance sign intended for the window of a hearse! One of the many unique advertising pieces that we have never yet offered for sale but will be available at the show.
Event runs Friday 5pm-9pm, Saturday 9am-5pm, and Sunday 10am-4pm. Golden Spike Event Center in Ogden
Two historic signs we recently cleaned up but have yet to bring in store. Sinclair is a 14' porcelain sign that came off of the R.W. Rampton Garage in Syracuse, UT (see original photos in the comments). Conoco is a 10' painted tin sign out Kemmerer, WY, a very small coal town where the first JC Penney store was opened in 1902. Both will likely be coming with us to the Acorns Antique & Vintage Show November 3rd-5th if we have room. We've acquired so much original advertising as of late and will have many quality items there that we have yet to ever offer for sale.
For the month of October, our store hours will be limited to Fridays and Saturdays from 11am-6pm. This is only temporary, regular Tuesday-Saturday hours will return for November and December. If you would like to schedule any appointment during closed hours, you can text/call Cory at 801-828-0286.
Lost in life and need a sign? Come on down, we've got a few π
Two amazing posters have just arrived and put up for sale in store with more coming soon!
First is this original 1934 movie poster for "The Man from Utah" starring a young John Wayne. Over the years, we have owned and sold every old western movie poster with "Utah" in the title except this one. We've had a few late 1930's re-releases, but this original release is extremely hard to come by with less than 5 believed to be in existence. It is unrestored, in fantastic condition for a 90 year old poster. Only damage is a few of pinholes, likely done when it was originally displayed in the theater. Measures approx 27"x41"
Second is this original 1883 chromolithograph of the statue of liberty titled "Liberty Enlightening the World". It was created 3 years before the statue was constructed in an attempt to help fund it's construction. France had gifted the statue to the United States, but the U. S. was to cover the costs of the pedestal and assembly. There was no budget for this, so they turned to the public for funding. The head and torch were finished first and were put on display where visitors could pay admission to climb inside. They also sold a number of promotional items, this being a chromolithograph print made to show what it would look like after it's completion. It shows the original copper finish, which only last for 2 years before turning green as there was no way to seal the outside at the time. While a number of these were sold, very few exist today. This poster was in fair condition prior to be linenbacked, but has been restored and displays wonderfully. Measures approx 21"x32"

It's getting pretty hard to come across any local signs, let alone four. Prichard is on hold to one of the family members and Clark is going in our collection. I'm sure the others won't last long, especially considering they are porcelain.
I've been slacking a bit posting here on Facebook, but still regularly sharing items on our Instagram. If you haven't followed us there, make sure to do so .
