In every Head Start program, teachers and staff partner with parents, providing resources that help children build strong school and social skills for kindergarten and beyond. For example, at Greater Bergen Community Action's Head Start, wellness classes included a “Let’s Get Moving” interactive exercise, and a unit on respiratory health which featured a book reading about a young girl who explains her asthma condition (a condition affecting a growing number of children under age 5), and a hands-on classroom activity about managing asthma in partnership with their on-site health assistance program.
And Head Start supports parents as well! As Neena, a Head Start Alum parent said, when her child was in Head Start, “…many ups and downs happened. Congrats to Julio Moreno who graduated with Honors from Gahr High School in Cerritos, California and was awarded 2 California State Seals for Biliteracy and Civic Engagement! (Head Start, from its inception 59 years ago, has been a national early childhood education model for dual language learners, so we are especially proud of Julio for his achievement in biliteracy!) Congrats to Head Start Alum Jacob Hoke, who earned an associate degree of applied science in professional crafts-jewelry from Haywood Community College in Clyde, North Carolina. This field of study complements his first degree, in welding, from Wilkes Community College, also in North Carolina. Jacob's jewelry is on display in several shops and galleries throughout the state. His aspirations include opening a jewelry studio.

Head Start programs in Pennsylvania and across the country promote school readiness for children ages birth to five from income-eligible families by supporting the whole child.
For instance, children at Luzerne County Head Start engaged in STEM-based classes where they learned about the solar eclipse by enacting the moon passing between the sun and Earth. They studied plants and the environment, experimented with musical instruments like the guitar, violin, and glockenspiel, and created art projects, including photo timelines of their years in Head Start. Congratulations to Head Start alum Cinthia Rivera, who graduated from the University of Oregon with a degree in Psychology and a minor in Anthropology! Cinthia plans to further her studies in the physician associate program, aiming to work in psychiatry with a special focus on providing mental health services to the Hispanic community. "I hope to remove barriers and ensure individuals are fully supported," she says.

Congrats to Head Start Alum Brittany Dingfelder, who graduated from the nursing program at Rochester Community and Technical College in Rochester, Minnesota. In fact, she completed the program during the final months of her pregnancy, In a true testament to her incredible drive and determination! Now, Brittany works as a hospice nurse, providing support and care to families during one of the most challenging times in their lives.

Head Start & Early Head Start programs in Delaware reflect the national commitment of focusing on the whole child, by providing a strong education for little ones from birth to age 5 along with resources and support for families. Last year their activities included practicing reading and listening skills (Mother Goose and other guest authors visited classes!), hands-on art and science projects, collaboration and social-emotional learning, along with trips to the local firehouses and police stations to learn about safety. Spotlight on: AVANCE-Houston, Inc. Hurricane Beryl has left only 6 of AVANCE's 18 centers with power. Many of their 2000 families, including those in Head Start/Early Head Start, and 400 employees are without basic utilities during this period of extreme heat. Despite outages, disrupted communications, and water, ice and food distribution challenges, the AVANCE team, led by Executive Director Luz Flores, is demonstrating their typical resilience, skills, and dedication. They continue to work from home while crisis teams assess the situation.

Head Start programs in Hawaii share the national commitment of ensuring all keiki (children) have the ‘Head Start’ in life they deserve! For example, last year children in HCAP’s Head Start and Early Head Start programs learned about environmental preservation through Dr. Seuss’s "The Lorax," explored the arts, practiced teamwork, and enhanced their hand-eye coordination and motor skills with activities like building with blocks, playing with Legos, solving puzzles, and using writing utensils.
