Over the past seven years, Sheila Serafin, RIM’s co-founder and Vice President of Global Sales, has volunteered as a mentor for the Business Incubator Program at Hoffman Estates High School. The basis of the program is that student groups come up with a "problem" or an idea for a product, service, or app. The students then do market research to validate the need/want, build out prototypes, do costing models, and work on a sales and marketing plan. There were nine groups this year at Hoffman Estates High School that competed to go to the district competition for the opportunity to receive funding to start an actual company based on their idea.

This year, Sheila’s team was Thermo Nova. Thermo Nova created a battery-operated, heated lunch box that can be controlled via Bluetooth. The market was for anyone who does not have access to a heat source to warm their food (students, truck drivers, police, technicians on the road, electricians etc.). Thermo Nova presented successfully at their local high school level and won the opportunity to pitch at the district level.

At the district-level competition, Thermo Nova had a fully-operational prototype, which included the Bluetooth coding and a heating element that was able to reach 100 degrees Celsius. The team was able to serve heated queso with chips to the judges to prove that it worked. They competed against four other high schools, which was a total of 10 other groups. In the end, Thermo Nova was not funded, but they "brought on the heat."

On Sunday, May 5th, a total of 20 participants from our Chicago and Corporate branches got together for the second-annual RIM Golf Scramble. Players teed off bright and early on the beautiful Sunday morning at the Bridges of Poplar Creek and wrapped up just before lunchtime.

We cannot thank these team members, and guests, enough for their participation! We are so thrilled that the event was a success for the second year in a row, and cannot wait to see what next year will bring. Great job, golfers!

Mental Health Awareness Month helps people recognize the ways mental illness impacts their lives, educates people about available services, and highlights ways to advocate—even if they don't have a mental illness. Recognition and education are important ways to remove the stigma associated with mental illness. Mental Health Awareness Month creates a time and space to start a conversation. Talking openly about mental health can reduce the misconceptions and stigma, and can encourage those who are suffering to seek help and find a support network.

At RIM, we firmly believe that ! We will always work hard to support our team and encourage everyone to take care of their mental health.

Each year around mid-May or early-June, police and Department of Transportation (DOT) authorities conduct road checks across North America via the Commercial Vehicle Safety Administration (CVSA). This year, DOT Blitz Week is May 14th to 16th.

During this time, law enforcement has heightened inspection activity at weigh stations, roaming patrols, and inspection sites. Some of the basic checks are:

🚚 Driver Credentials
🚚 Hours of Service
🚚 Proper Permits
🚚 Drug/Alcohol Impairment
🚚 Vehicle Maintenance, which includes brakes, engines, lights, fuel systems, and cargo securement (when applicable)

If drivers are stopped, they should be prepared for authorities to conduct inspections on all of the above. It is important to note that inspectors will put a heavy emphasis on controlled substances, alcohol, and tractor protection systems. Drivers should be proactive and checking and monitoring these items regularly, but especially during Blitz Week.

During Blitz Week, you can expect much less capacity. Commercial drivers are often made aware of the increase in inspections during this time and will purposely sideline themselves to avoid the intense inspections. Lower capacity will usually drive up the spot-market pricing. Additionally, we advise all customers to be on alert for slower transit times due to inspections.

During Blitz Week, and always, be kind to truckers! They are America’s backbone. They get you what you need, when you need it!

In honor of Arbor Day 2024, our team planted a new Matador Maple tree outside of our new Chicago/Corporate facility. Preserving and adding to our environment is something that we place a very high priority on.

Not only did we plant the tree, we also added our memorial plaque in remembrance of all of our outstanding team members who are no longer with us. As the plaque says, they will always be remembered and forever cherished by RIM.

Our RIM Healthy Perspective posts are back! Providing healthy tips and recipes to our employees is important, which is why we would also like to extend these to all of you! Now, without further ado…

How much time do you have to exercise? 💪

Long workdays and home responsibilities can easily take up every precious minute of the day, and it can feel overwhelming to fit in the recommended 150 minutes (or 2.5 hours) of heart pumping physical activity a week to maintain good health. If time management is an issue, performing bite-sized workouts over the course of the day can provide flexibility and be as effective as one continuous session. Mini workouts are shorter sessions that break up activity into several smaller routines. When you are short on time, three 10-minute bouts of physical activity accumulated throughout the day can be easier to fit in.

A FEW TIPS TO MAKE MINI WORKOUTS WORK FOR YOU:
✨ Schedule exercise into your day, just like you would an appointment.
✨ Maximize your time by alternating between low-intensity and high-intensity moves.
✨ Repeat mini-workouts three times a day, separated by one to four hours. Short bursts of activity throughout the day can be a solution for staying healthy on days when it feels like you don’t have time to exercise.

We would like to thank all of our team members who participated in various Earth Day events last week! 🌎

In Chicago, our teams went out to clean up any trash around our facility. In Atlanta, some of our team members, on their own time, went and cleaned up trash locally and planted several new trees and native shrubs. Finally, in Los Angeles, our team planted some beautiful succulents outside of our facility and picked up any stray trash.

We are so thankful to have such wonderful team members who are willing to take time out of their busy days to help improve our environment.

Happy National Bring Your Child to Work Day!

In Chicago on April 23rd, our 30 kids spent time learning what each of our departments do at RIM, and why they are all crucial to our success as company. Participants broke out into groups to represent the different departments at RIM and each group made a paper chain. Each group’s chain was then linked together to form the entire chain of RIM! The kids also stacked and wrapped their own mini candy pallets, took a tour of the office, and went on a golf cart ride through the warehouse. The day ended with each child getting a paycheck for all of their hard work, which was presented by our President, Rob Mueller.

We are so grateful to all of our employees who brought their children in to participate! We had a blast and cannot wait for next year!
