The Bennett family of University Heights, Ohio, came harrowingly close to becoming one of those statistics last year. While on vacation, their four-year-old found her way into a backyard pool and was discovered unconscious at the bottom. Fortunately, her 15-year-old sister, Ayala, had completed an American Red Cross Lifeguarding course including first aid and CPR, just two weeks earlier. She was able to perform CPR until medical help arrived; the little girl recovered. For stepping up and helping to save her sister’s life, Alaya earned the Certificate of Merit." - American Red Cross of Northern Ohio

Ayala Bennett, a student at Yavne High School for Girls in Beachwood today received the Certificate of Merit, the highest Lifesaving Award given by the American , for saving her 4-year old sister from drowning. Lifeguarding Course: March 16, 23, and 24 in Washington $250
CPR and First Aid Course: April 13 9am-2pm in Washington $90
CPR and First Aid Course: May 4 10 am - 3pm in Bayview/Bath $90

Could your child survive if they fell into the river? A pool? A horse trough? These are REAL situations that children find themselves in on a daily basis in the US. I can help your child be an aquatic problem solver should they find themselves in these situations, and give them a better chance of SURVIVAL.

Session details:
Begins Feb 12
Swim 5 days per week
Times available between 1:00-3:45pm and 6:00-6:45pm
Lessons are no more than 10 minutes
Session is scheduled for 8 weeks, many children are ready sooner
Lessons will be at the Moore Aquatic and Fitness Center Washington

On Friday Dec 8 at 5:30, you can learn to swim like a mermaid! Join us at the Moore Aquatic Center for the best hour of your life!

*Swimmers must be 6 or older (Adults welcome!), able to swim 15 yards and float front & back.

I'll be hosting a Public Mermaid Lesson Friday, December 8th 5:30-6:30PM at the Moore Aquatic and Fitness Center in Washington!

Class is limited to 8 swimmers.

**Swimmers MUST be 6 or over AND able to Float front and back for 10 seconds, tread for 20 seconds, and swim 15 yards, ALL in deep water and unassisted. NO FLOATIES OR LIFE JACKETS.

It is with mixed emotions that I announce my decision to move to North Carolina this fall.

My husband and I lived in NC prior to our arrival in Traverse City in 2012. In our time here, my husband completed his degree at the Great Lakes Maritime Academy and has been working on the ships for several years now. During his time at school, we talked of moving back to NC, but I was working at The Y and dearly loved my job and community (and still do). We almost left about 4 years ago, but I was just starting TC Mermaid and the time didn’t seem right. With his extended time on the ships (usually 60-70 days at a time), my desire to stay in the town where I had created a community for myself outweighed any decisions to leave. Until now that is 

We absolutely LOVE this area, but the grey winters are tough, especially considering my husband works in the cold/snow/yuck and then comes home on annually in January to the cold/snow/yuck. And then he goes back to it in March when the Soo Locks open.

Not wanting to put the “blame” all on him, I admit that I have a tougher time than many with the grey. I am a summer soul and need warmth and sunshine the majority of the year in order to feel whole.

This leads me to let you know that we are reconfiguring TC Mermaid BUT WILL STILL HAVE LESSONS. You all are TOO IMPORTANT for me to walk away from without continuing to serve you. The team and I are working on how to continue providing you with the best lessons in town. We aren’t 100% sure how that is going to look/act/work yet, but we are working together to do our best for you. I will also be conducting mermaid parties, lessons, Lifeguard training, and ISR in coastal North Carolina, so come visit!

For those that are reaching out--I promise I'm not ignoring you! Between my 3 emails (2 business, 1 personal), I have 126 emails that all need attention. I'm working through them 1 at a time (and hoping my team can help some this week too!)

The good part of this is we have hosted 3 courses in the past 3 weekends. Kudos to those who are joining the adventure!
