Historic Look Back- German Wheel-lock!

I thought this was very interesting. This is a photo of a German wheellock gr***de launcher circa 1615. I thought it was interesting as its a wheellock rather than a flintlock. Note the bore size. Range was short but its an interesting step in the history of gr***de launchers.

INSIDE THE AN-94 NIKONOV

In September of 2001 Fi****ms News (then Shotgun News) sent a young writer by the name of David M. Fortier on assignment to Russia. He traveled East from Moscow into the interior of the country to the formerly closed city of Izhevsk. There he visited IZHMASH (today Kalashnikov Concern) where he had the opportunity to handle and test fire a 5.45x39mm AN-94 “Nikonov” assault rifle. What makes the Nikonov unique is its ability to fire two shots before the recoil impulse from the first shot is transmitted to the rifleman. Both rounds are fired so fast it sounds like one report. On full automatic the AN-94 fires the first two shots on 1800 rpm and then the cyclic rate drops to 600 rpm. While the AN-94 was virtually unknown in the West in 2001, today it is a popular gun in many video games. Fi****ms News paved the way, providing one of the very first reports on this interesting design intended to increase the rifleman’s hit probability.

Historic Look Back- Cold War

US M231 as seen inserted into a rear door firing port. The M231 Firing Port Weapon (FPW) is an adapted version of the M16A1 assault rifle for shooting from firing ports on the M2 Bradley. The infantry's normal M16A1s are too long for use in a "buttoned up" APC, so the FPW was developed to provide a suitable weapon for this role. These weapons are only capable of fully automatic fire, with a special side plate mounted inside the lower receiver and a selector that only has "safe" and "auto" positions. These weapons retain a 65% parts commonality with standard M16A1 rifles. Only the M196 tracer round was authorized for operational use as no sights were fitted. Rate of fire was 1100 to 1200 rpm.

Can you ID it?

11/07/2024

Real American heavy metal.

You might notice the round plates under the barrels of the main gun batteries on the USS Salem. Those are covers for the ejections ports. Every time one of those guns fire a 93 lb brass case goes flying out. Yes, these are among the largest semiautomatic guns ever built. The USN 8”/55 Mk 16 guns were the fastest of that size mounted on ships. The system not only utilized brass casings for the blasting charges but it could load the guns at any angle. This allowed an amazing increase in the fire rate. Other contemporaries around the world could fire 10k-12k pounds per minute. The Mk 16 guns on 3 triple turrets could reach 36k pounds per minute, or 108 rounds per minute or one shot every 5 seconds!

11/07/2024

If the caption is accurate these are Russian whalers who have decided to use 14.5mm PTRS anti-tank rifles to bag small whales instead of the traditional harpoon. Although they can also be used to defend the ships. Though from who?
