Lab analysis of Subway tuna sandwiches fails to identify tuna DNA 22/06/2021

A lab test commissioned by the New York Times failed to identify any tuna DNA in a series of Subway tuna sandwiches.

A reporter acquired “more than 60in - worth of Subway tuna sandwiches” from three Los Angeles storefronts, then engaged a specialized fish-testing lab. Researchers were unable to pinpoint a species.

“There are two conclusions,” a lab spokesperson told the Times. “One, it’s so heavily processed that whatever we could pull out, we couldn’t make an identification.

“Or we got some and there’s just nothing there that’s tuna.”..

How The Vinyl Resurgence Is Impacting Film and TV Score Sales 07/06/2021

In late December 2019, for the first time since Nielsen Music began electronically tracking music sales 29 years ago, vinyl albums surpassed 1 million copies in a single week. Among those most eager to capitalize on vinyl’s resurgence: the creators of film and TV scores and soundtracks.

“There are fans who are score collectors and there are fans who are vinyl collectors. They’re both collectors’ markets,” says Brian McNelis, senior vp music and soundtracks at Lakeshore Entertainment. Lakeshore released seven scores and soundtracks on vinyl in 2015; last year, the number soared to 30.

Film studios are now working to target this growing group of obsessive collectors with a flood of new vinyl offerings, even though they’ve stopped releasing as much film music on CDs...

China's Zhurong Mars rover touches down on the red planet 20/05/2021

China's space program took a major leap today when it successfully landed the Zhurong rover on Mars, marking the country’s first landing on another planet. Teams will now prepare to roll the rover off its landing platform and onto the dusty Martian surface to begin a mission to search for evidence of water and hints of past life.

The touchdown makes China the second country in history to deposit a rover on the surface of Mars. After months in orbit around the red planet, the Tianwen-1 spacecraft released the Zhurong rover for a landing in Utopia Planitia, a vast plain that may once have been covered by an ancient Martian ocean. The 529-pound rover survived a perilous descent to the surface, including atmospheric entry, slowing from supersonic speeds with a parachute, and finally using retrorockets to safely alight on the ground...

No One Actually Knows If You’re Vaccinated 14/05/2021

If you have been fortunate enough to receive a COVID-19 vaccine, you also possess an essential, high-tech tool for proving your immunity to others.

Just kidding, it’s a piece of cardstock. On the flimsy rectangle that all Americans get with their shots, doctors, and pharmacists record dates of administration, vaccine type, and lot number. Some scrawl the information by hand with a pen; others apply a preprinted sticker. The cards offer no special marker to prove their authenticity, no scannable code to connect to a digital record. At three by four inches, they’re even too awkwardly sized to fit in a wallet. A mid-century polio-vaccine card doesn’t look too different from today’s COVID-19 vaccination records...

No One Actually Knows If You’re Vaccinated Vaccination requirements in stores, offices, and schools can offer peace of mind. But they’re rarely going to prove anything.

Families, Communities Divided Over COVID Vaccination In Rural Montana 11/05/2021

The COVID-19 vaccination operation at the Flathead County fairgrounds in northwestern Montana can dole out 1,000 doses in seven hours. But demand has plummeted recently, down to fewer than 70 requests for the shots a day. So, the county dropped its mass vaccination offerings as May began — from three clinics a week to two. Though most of those eligible in the county hasn't yet gotten the jab, the takers are few.

Daily COVID-19 vaccination rates are falling nationwide, and gaps in vaccine uptake are starting to show, especially in rural America. That leaves many communities grappling with an imperfect pandemic endgame...

Jobs surprise triggers battle over federal aid 07/05/2021

The steady jobs recovery from Covid-19 slowed dramatically in April, stunning Wall Street analysts and raising questions about the strength of the pandemic comeback and the impact of generous unemployment benefits.

The government said Friday that the economy created 266,000 jobs in April — a strong number in ordinary times but sharply below the Wall Street consensus of nearly 1 million, driven by reopenings in the beaten-down leisure and hospitality sectors as vaccinations continue...

Opinion: Facebook's decision on readmitting Trump is going to enrage people. But there's more to the story 04/05/2021

Four months ago, Facebook announced former President Donald Trump had been suspended indefinitely from its platform. On Wednesday morning, Facebook's oversight board -- the first-of-its-kind group of legal experts and human rights leaders -- will announce its decision about whether Trump will be permanently banned...

Facebook's decision will be a litmus test for social media platforms' capacity to draw the line between the protection of free speech and public safety. But no matter what the outcome, one thing is certain: it will enrage many Americans, and even more will feel helpless about the prospect of political reconciliation on social media. So before Trump takes the spotlight in ongoing discussions about social media and politics once again, is there anything that we -- the citizens of social media -- can do to stem the tide of polarization on our platforms?
