The arctic blast approaching will bring temperatures down below freezing for several days.

Some lawns may not have gone fully dormant yet.

This means many lawns could possibly take on some frost damage.

CENTIPEDE LAWNS usually take the most damage from this type of weather event. Also lawns with a heavy thatch layer will also see the most damage.

Here’s a couple of things you can do to help it out.

-don’t water the lawn until you don’t see any freezing temperatures in the forecast for the next 7 days.

-don’t mow the lawn before the freezing weather

-cover any sensitive ornamental plants and flowers in your flower beds

Many lawns will turn brown due to the temperatures. Some from frost damage, some just going into dormancy. We won’t know the extent of the damage until the spring green up in March-April.

Lawn burw**d or “sticker w**d” is a winter annual that germinates in October and grows all winter long. Next April, it produces the burs that are capsules that contain burw**d seed. To avoid the stickers in the spring, you must treat lawn burw**d during fall and winter.

The most important factor for effectively controlling lawn burw**d is to apply post-emergence herbicides in early winter prior to flowering and seed set.
