Condition Spotlight: Generalized Anxiety Disorder.

Anxiety is an emotion characterized by feelings of tension, worried thoughts, and even physical changes (I.e., increased blood pressure).

While some feelings of anxiety are normal, anxiety disorders involve excessive and uncontrollable fear or worry. It can cause people to avoid situations that trigger their anxiety, affecting school, work, and personal relationships.

There are different types of anxiety disorders such as generalized anxiety (as highlighted in this post), social anxiety, separation anxiety, panic disorder, phobias, etc.

Approximately 30% of adults will experience an anxiety disorder at some point in their life making it one of the most common mental health conditions.

Anxiety disorders are treatable, often with therapy (i.e., cognitive behavioral therapy or CBT) and/ or medication management.

A good night sleep to us is like a charger to your phone when the battery is low. If you only charged your phone half way if shuts off after a few hours of use. It’s the same with our bodies if you only get 4 or 5 hours of sleep that 3 o’clock slump is going to hit hard and it’s going to make it tough to pull through the rest of your day.

A good night sleep allows our mind and body to recharge after a long day. Our bodies need at least 7-9 hours of sleep each night for our health and overall function.

Poor sleep is linked to physical problems such as a weakened immune system, high blood pressure, slowed metabolism, and mental health problems such as anxiety and depression.

Sleep hygiene is so important for setting yourself up for a good night sleep.

Sleep hygiene looks like turning off all screens an hour before bed, taking a hot bath, meditating, doing your skin care routine, etc.
