Kyle Engelken; Maquoketa Valley HS ‘27

I started posting on Instagram regularly in November or so () and to be honest, it was silly of me to wait so long to do that, for the current HS and college wrestlers typically use Instagram moreso than the primary platform I use, which has always been Facebook… I mean, I fought it for a long time due to being kind of limited there since it only allows a certain amount of characters… and you all know how wordy I typically am… 😬… So I have to cut my Insta articles down a bit most of the time, but it’s worth it, for now I have a grasp of how my stuff resonates with people from younger generations.

Anyways, since I began posting there, if there’s one current wrestler who has always shown that he is interested in the posts I write about the old-timers, it’s Kyle Engelken, a Freshman in HS out of Maquoketa Valley HS. Kyle wrestled varsity as a Freshman at a tough 138 lb class this year and finished with a winning record on the season! Prior to HS, he had qualified for AAU State a couple-few times. He hasn’t accumulated the hardware that some guys have yet, but his time is coming! 138 is a TOUGH weight class for a Freshman to be at… especially if they haven’t begun to fully grow yet. This kid keeps at it and I would love to see him make the podium someday before he graduates. Hey, why not?! 🤷‍♂️

Kyle also plays football!

Appreciate your support and the respect you consistently show to the sport’s past warriors and I know I’m not alone there!

Brady Davis; Maquoketa Valley HS ‘24

I have to give a shout-out to this kid. He was easily one of my personal favorites to watch at the entire 2024 Iowa HS State Wrestling Tournament last weekend. His name is Brady Davis of Maquoketa Valley HS and he placed 2nd at 1A 215, capping off a HS career in which he qualified for state 3X and placed 7-2 in his final two seasons.

So Brady fell to a crazy-impressive Sophomore named Ashton Honnold of Nodaway Valley HS in the finals. Honnold won 6-4 in OT, I believe. The battle that these two warriors displayed is up there with some of the best matches I’ve ever seen at the Iowa HS State Wrestling Tournament in my entire life. Both these guys came after each other in uninhibited, wide-open fashion in which they moved around the mat like a couple of giant 106 lbers… And these two guys gave the fans an awesome show, to the point where it was unfortunate that one of them had to go home feeling as if they didn’t do enough to accomplish their season-goal, when in reality, it is impossible for anyone to put in more effort into anything as both these two did in this finals match. Although Brady Davis was the one who fell short here, I hope he still went home feeling proud of himself because he put it ALL out there. There was a moment either late in the 3rd period or in OT where these two were battling for the final and presumed winning TD and Honnold hit a shot that appeared to force Davis out of position and I thought the match was going to be over for him…. I thought Ashton was going to score the TD and win the match at that point, but somehow and in what seemed to be a MILLISECOND, Davis regained his balance as well as his composure and changed directions on a dime and SPRINTED into his own power-double-leg attempt in which he almost scored his own takedown. The agility, speed, power and presence of mind that this kid displayed in that moment was unbelievable to me, for you simply don’t see a whole lot of guys at that weight who are able to do effortlessly move their bodies like that, especially in a scramble situation where they appear to be in danger. Not to mention, this came at the end of a hard-fought match, in which most guys have a difficult time merely walking to the center of the mat after battling for 6 minutes the way these two did. I just couldn’t have been more impressed…

Brady actually caught my radar when he was an 8th grader and you may be surprised how this initially happened… Brady hit my radar when I started the “Wrestlers Who Fish” series. Brady was one of the guys I featured when he was a Freshman, for he had been slaying some giant bass! He was also a longtime member of DC Elite, which is the same club my youngest brothers were part of. So I have known about this kid for a few years, but to be honest, I always associated his name with fishing, for I hadn’t ever gotten to see him compete in person until last week. It was cool to put a “wrestler to the name” with him, but even cooler that he was so impressive out there. I always heard good things about the kid, and holy moly, these people were not exaggerating!

I don’t know where or if this kid is competing in college, but given the potential I saw in him at state last week, I feel he would make any program that decides to recruit him very, very happy. Like any HS wrestler, there will be a learning curve for him in college with some of the technique and what-not… but from a physical/intangibles standpoint, he appears to check all the boxes, IMO. He is strong and quick for a big guy and if he practices and continues to compete with the same fire he did at state last week, he can be groomed into something special, especially with high-level practice partners! I would certainly be recruiting him if I were a college coach.

Tonight is bittersweet for me. This will be the last time I see these to warm together . I know it didn’t end the way Aidan wanted but there is no other place you’d rather be right now then warming up one last time with his partner. Getting him ready for the big show. I’m gonna miss these too greatly.
It’s never goodbye, it’s see you soon
