As you journey along Highway 1 in #SLOCAL, be sure to watch for some of California's most captivating wildlife 🦓. From Zebras to Elephant Seals, the scenery offers a glimpse of the state's unique and breathtaking biodiversity: 🦓 Zebras: Believe it or not, zebras are a common sight for drivers passing Hearst Castle, between San Simeon and Ragged Point. The gorgeously striped species is native to Africa, but the herd here descends from zebras in William Randolph Hearst’s private zoo. 🐋 Whales: In SLO CAL, you might see any number of species, like blue whales (including Humpbacks, Bryde’s, Sei, and Minke whales) and more commonly spotted Gray whales, which usually migrate south from Alaska October through early spring. 🦋 Monarch Butterflies: The Monarch Butterfly Grove in Pismo Beach is the place to catch these ethereal insects soaring. More than 10,000 butterflies migrate to this locale annually, escaping cold weather in favor of SLO CAL's temperate climate (just like many of our human visitors). From late October to February, you'll find the most to marvel over. 🦭 Elephant Seals: A cruise north up Highway 1 is incomplete without a stop at The Piedras Blancas Elephant Seal Rookery in San Simeon, where you'll get an up-close view of the daily trials and tribulations of these fascinating animals. Depending on the season, you may see males challenge each other to a scuffle or even witness a birth! 🐚 Tide Pools: Ready to witness the many wonders of tide pools, and meet their residents, like limpets, hermit crabs, anemones, sea stars, mussels and more? Tide-pooling is a popular activity for visitors of all ages to our stretch of Highway 1, especially at low tide, when habitats are more exposed. (Of course, more exposure also means more vulnerability, so watch your step!)
