IMPORTANT AUTOMOBILE BODY SHOP REPAIR INFO

Good morning everyone, Happy Monday and I hope that you are all warm, safe, and dry out there!

I wanted to share a few tidbits of vital information on how to prepare in advance for selecting a body shop, and making sure that your current automobile policy will have existing and appropriate endorsements for rental reimbursement if and when your automobile will have to be taken to a body shop.

Colorado is a TOP FIVE state for hail and weather related accidents/claims, along with many youthful and new to our state drivers, we are among the TOP 10 for accidents nationwide.

Being aware of these scenarios that will likely eventually occur, will save you a very high amount of stress, out of pocket expense, and many days of frustration.

I just recently helped a client and personal friend of mine that had his vehicle in a body shop for repair after a deer collided into his Chevy Tahoe while he was driving home from work. The total repair time was over two months, of which over 30 days of that time, he did not have any more rental reimbursement on his insurance policy. To make matters worse, GM was on strike and the parts needed for repair were on backorder for 30 days or longer….so many items could have made his experience much more manageable and easier to deal with, thus my list of advice below.

Here are the items that you should have organized in advance:

I. Make sure that your automobile policy provides for rental reimbursement, and be aware that most carriers will only offer this coverage endorsement with Comprehensive coverage. We as an agency recommend at least $50/day up to 30 days as this will usually cover upwards of a full size car/SUV for most families. Many carriers offer lower/higher limits – make sure to go over these details with your agent in order to figure out what works best for your household.

II. Make sure to contact a local dealer for your vehicle brand to see whether there are any backorders for your make/model automobile. This is a huge portion of why a vehicle sits at a body shop for days and weeks with no progression on the repair, as many times OEM parts are not available, or are on backorder. If your policy provides for OEM parts replacement, and these parts are NOT available for your automobile, speak with the shop or dealer about the use of NON-OEM compatible parts (these are many times the near exact same fitment, but may not have the automobile brand name endorsed on the part).

III. Make sure that you have an idea of which auto repair shops you prefer to do business with. If you have made a decision, make sure to call them and ask whether they provide loaner vehicles and if there is a cost to these vehicles, or if they are only offering “rental vehicle service set-up”. If you need further assistance, please contact your insurance agent or your insurance carrier and request their assistance on recommending a local shop or automobile dealer.

IV. In my experience, I recommend that my clients work with a franchise automobile dealer, i.e., a GM, Lexus, BMW, Chevrolet, Honda, Toyota, Audi, Ford, etc., dealer. These dealers will many times have their own body shops, or sub-contract to a body shop, and may provide fleet service loaners, in addition to a service to help set up a rental vehicle through Hertz, Budget, Enterprise, and so on.

V. Franchise dealers are also more accountable when it comes to repairing vehicles as they are insured properly, and their reputation is of utmost importance not only to their business success, but additionally most manufacturers have a very strict code of conduct for business with their franchise dealers…otherwise, Lexus or Chevrolet, etc., will make sure that dealers do a professional job of repairing their clients’ vehicles and providing exceptional customer service, as it reflects on the reputation of the brand the dealers represent.

VI. Make sure that whether you choose to work with an Independent or Dealer, that you have a committed consultant to refer to, as well as their superior. You will need to communicate with the service advisor, as well as the insurance adjuster and the insurance carrier claims representative - in order to understand where the process of repairing your automobile stands, along with settling additional supplements on additional damages/repairs not found initially.

In the end, please stay in contact with your Agent or Agency Service Team, in order that notes can be taken & updated on your claim, and the process of repairing your automobile can be properly managed and time-lined for expeditious completion.
