It’s my favorite time of year (and tastiest)! The students made their own versions of ORs. We had some yummier options than we have in past year and now I’m contemplating making that a requirement for next year. 😉 They were extra creative this year!

Such a fun day! The surgical tech program was fortunate enough to be a part of the “College for a Day” event yesterday. Unfortunately, I was far too busy with the 120 5th graders rolling through my station to get any pictures this time. But round 2 next week! Thanks to everybody for putting this wonderful event on to showcase all Western Nebraska Community College has to offer!

President Greg Dart is among 24 recipients of the Phi Theta Kappa Paragon Award for New Presidents. “Phi Theta Kappa is such an amazing organization focused on helping community college students achieve their best," Dart said. "It is an honor to be recognized by such an amazing organization and can say without a doubt the award is more of a reflection of our amazing faculty, staff, and most of all students than it is about myself as a president. I could not be more proud of WNCC.”

The new cohort has been hard at work learning the basics these last few weeks. 💉🩸🩻

I can attest that they are having WAY more fun in the lab classes than they are in the lecture classes! Look at those new smiling faces 🙃

Our Surgical Tech program was lucky enough to participate in career cabs this week. We were able to talk to about 65 sophomores from around the area about our profession and all the fun things we get to do. These students were able to drill holes in their bones for screw placement.

Marcene pulled out the blindfolds this week to see who could figure out the most instruments by touch alone. Don’t worry, we left the sharp instruments out this time. It was close, and a $10 gift card to Starbucks (a hot commodity) was on the line. We had a winner in each group; Danielle and Brooke knocked it out of the park!

Happy Surgical Tech week to all of our fellow CST’s!!

23/09/2023

Our final student this week is Blake!

Blake was born October 4th, favorite color is blue, he enjoys gardening and his form of relaxation comes through a pizza and movie night; specifically Fight Club.

He chose to go through the surgical tech program because he wanted to find a career that made him feel good about what he was doing. His favorite part of the program so far is seeing himself that much closer to receiving a degree. His favorite specialty is OB and General. He doesn’t care where he ends up after school as long as his kiddos are there!

Something Blake REALLY wanted everyone to know: when he was born, he won a “Most Beautiful Baby” award in a hospital competition. His mom even won $10! 🙃 (We need to see a baby picture now! Hopefully you received you’re “fair” cut for the role you played in that contest 😉)

22/09/2023

Meet Brooke (she’s literally the sweetest, nicest person ever and I don’t think I can even come up with a sarcastic or fun thing to twist about her! But here we go.)

She was born January 31st, likes the color green, and she enjoys putting her feet up on a Friday night, watching new girl, snacking on some tacos with her puppy. 🐶

Brooke came to our surgical tech program because she wanted something hands on and being able to provide care for others. Her favorite thing about school so far has been all the new friendships she’s developed.

She’s interested in orthopedics and would love to be a traveler once she’s done with school and has a little experience.

Hidden talent? She has a green thumb! (Sounds to me like she needs to learn to scrub better 😉. That’s as good as it gets with sweet Brooke).

21/09/2023

Today is all about Danielle!

She was born July 4th, loves the color pink, and you’ll find her hanging out with Tatiana watching All American. Her favorite food is a big juicy steak with a side salad of candy. With every bit of free time she has, Danielle loves hanging out with her adorable nephew!

Danielle chose the surgical tech field because she wanted to make a difference in people’s lives. “We make a difference every day.” She’s most interested in plastics and would love to travel someday.

Her hidden talent is that she loves to dance! What kind of dance you may be wondering? Tap dance, polka, swing, ballet, ballroom, hip-hop? My moneys on breakdancing (I can see Danielle busting some sweet breakdance moves at home). Rest assured, we’ll be finding out soon! 🙃

20/09/2023

This gal right here is Tatiana!

She was born February 12th, loves to snack on wings and watch All American. On the weekends, she enjoys getting to be outdoors working on various projects she’s started and never finished 😉 as well as traveling.

Tatiana came to our program because wanted something hands on and being able to help people feel better is so rewarding! Her favorite things about school are the hands on one-on-one learning, all of her classmates and instructors (Brownie points!!) she’s especially interested in OB/GYN and Ortho and would love to do either somewhere in Colorado when she’s finished.

Her special or hidden talent you ask? She loves to cook and bake. Again, another student who claims they can cook/bake but has never been so kind enough to prove it in class 🤣
