Today, we celebrate the 34th anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). We’re excited to highlight one of our projects that contributes to making public transit more inclusive!

As part of the Chicago Transit Authority’s All Stations Accessibility Program (ASAP), our team provided architecture and engineering services for Phase One of the Austin Station project. This phase includes crucial ADA enhancements such as a new elevator, ramps, and upgraded facilities to ensure equitable access for all.

Our architectural and engineering expertise is paving the way for a future where accessibility is the norm, not an exception.

The City of Hickory in North Carolina embarked on a project to create an accessible, attractive and responsibly-constructed riverwalk that runs along Lake Hickory between the existing Rotary-Geitner Park and the proposed Old Lenoir Road roadside trail connection. Epstein served as a subconsultant to Design Workshop, a national landscape architecture firm, to provide structural engineering services as part of the team.

The City celebrated the grand opening of the riverwalk last week, on April 4,. with a ribbon cutting ceremony.

The riverwalk is intended to spur private investment, create economic development and become an iconic attraction for the City, representing Hickory’s commitment to compelling civic infrastructure and its ability to create an image and quality of life that will be attractive to current and future citizens, visitors, employers and investors.

Amtrak Wants Public Ideas for Chicago Union Station Improvements - Amtrak Media 19/03/2024

All aboard for the future! Epstein is thrilled to announce our selection to lead the complete transformation at Chicago’s historic Union Station for Amtrak, the leader in passenger rail service. Epstein, in partnership with FXCollaborative, is providing programming, preliminary and final design, and construction administration services as part of the revitalization to increase capacity and provide a higher, safer level of service for Amtrak and Metra Rail passengers.

This transformation calls for reconfiguration and replacement of all concourse functions and encompasses architectural and interior improvements, and integration of new digital technology upgrades. The modernization will reduce congestion, improve accessibility and provide updated safety elements.

Think brighter lights, improved air circulation, more concise wayfinding, and easier crowd navigation for travelers.

Amtrak launched the project with a customer survey to guide the design. The survey, now closed, was open though the peak holiday season to maximize engagement with Amtrak riders. Amtrak received over 4,000 responses from all 50 states. 20% of respondents are Metra riders, 12% Amtrak riders and a full 68% ride a combination of Metra, Amtrak, and Greyhound. The outcomes reinforced the overall project goals.

This is not our first venture with FXCollaborative, the New York-based design firm behind the newly renovated Moynihan Train Hall within Penn Station. Our two firms previously completed the colossal, $1.5B expansion and renovation program at the Jacob K. Javits Center in New York City with the shared goal to fully realize the center’s original designer, I.M. Pei’s, vision, notably the “Crystal Castle”.

The design will also provide “workforce” housing geared towards the needs of scientists and academics as well as an affordable housing component for existing neighbors.

Flyover Chicago is open! As designers of the space, Epstein was afforded early access to the ride last week for a preview of, what some Epsteiners viewed as, a love letter to the City of Chicago.

Riders are flown over and through the city thanks to incredible drone footage that the creators began curating two years ago - and trust us, it will awaken all your senses. Sights, sounds and feels are all part of the fun!

Epstein’s historic Live Stock National Bank helped to define Chicago's skyline in the wake of the 'Second Great Fire' in 1934. The Commission on Chicago Landmarks designated the Live Stock National Bank a landmark in 2008, and today the historic building is up for a major modern redevelopment.

Projects from the early 20th century such as the Live Stock National Bank serve as a testament to the designers’ ability to shape history. Present day adaptability provides an opportunity to continue a celebration of the heritage embedded within these architectural gems, fostering a deep connection to the community's past and contributing to a lasting legacy that enriches the architectural narrative of a city. One that Epstein knows very well.

Epstein is pleased to announce our Silo Mixed-Use Development received the Second Award in Rethink the Future's Global Architecture & Design Awards 2023!

In the 1850s, Chicago was considered the grain capital of the world. The mill and silo buildings, located primarily within the Fulton Market neighborhoods, are a direct reflection of Chicago’s wheat industry heritage, one of the major industries upon which the city was built.

In recent years, as Fulton Market has become more trendy with the opening of new bars, restaurants, residences, and offices, many of the protected historic buildings have been renovated. Unprotected historic buildings beyond the district boundaries, however, are routinely threatened with demolition.

One such example was a 250,000-square-foot mill factory, which spanned a 2.2-acre site and included a series of brick loft buildings ranging from three to six stories tall and a soaring concrete structure with more than a dozen silos.

Epstein seized the opportunity and developed a design solution that would preserve the character of the existing grain silos while incorporating the modern program elements that would allow the project to be financially viable and profitable.

Epstein's Ryan Peterson, senior planner, presented to University of Chicago students enrolled in the Urban Design with Nature class. Appropriately, the presentation took place at the Climate Action Museum, as it discussed the importance of urban mobility, and its impact on the environment.

Ryan's presentation shed light on the pressing need to steer urban mobility in a direction that supports efficient city living and harmonizes with our natural environment. He discussed insights into the field at large and how Epstein is leading the way in these topics through innovative approaches and recommendations, highlighting Epstein's commitment to sustainable mobility and design practices.

We hope to see many of these students put this academic knowledge into practice after they graduate!
