Hutchinson Community College is a two-year community college located in Hutchinson, Kansas

More than 16,000 people from throughout Kansas, a number of states and abroad take advantage of the educational offerings at HutchCC each year, with more than 8,000 full- and part-time students enrolled and another 8,000-plus individuals participating in the wide variety of non-credit and business/industry offerings at the college.

2024 Distinguished Dragons: PRESLEE IRWIN

From Choctaw, Oklahoma, Preslee Irwin studied Sports Management while at HutchCC. Her nominator writes, “Even though Preslee is busy with her course schedule and softball activities, she makes time to visit her professors outside of class times to keep pace with the topics. Preslee dedicates herself to all her endeavors to the best of her abilities.”

In addition to being a member of the HutchCC Softball Team that was the first team in HutchCC history to make it to nationals, Preslee is a member of Phi Theta Kappa. Her being named to the President’s Honor Roll is just the beginning of the many recognitions she has received. Others include being a conference, regional, and district title holder along with her other sophomore class in softball as well as being named twice as Academic All American.

Her favorite HutchCC experience was going to nationals for the first time in the program's history. Preslee would like to thank all of her professors and her academic advisor, Bernadett Dillon, as well as her awesome coaches and her softball teammates.

2024 Distinguished Dragons: AMANDA HIGGINBOTHAM

From Haven, Kansas, Amanda Higginbotham is studying Music Education while at HutchCC. Her nominator greatly praises Amanda’s time management ability with her being highly involved both on campus and in the community all while doing very well in her classes as her being named to the Vice President’s Honor Roll demonstrates.

Spending much time in Stringer Fine Arts, Amanda is a member of Symphonic Band, Pep Band, Concert Choir, Badinage, and Reno Choral Society. On top of this, she was also a HutchCC Ambassador and volunteers with the Boys and Girls Club. Amanda’s talents are greatly recognized as noted by her being the recipient of many scholarships including the Sally McIntire Scholarship, Chencho E Alfaro Scholarship, Music Major Scholarship, Ambassador Scholarship, Band Scholarship, The Reno County Activity Scholarship, and The HutchCC Jazz Scholarship. Her favorite HutchCC experience so far has been going to the University of Northern Colorado’s Jazz Festival with Badinage and Jazz Band.

Amanda would like to thank the faculty in the music department for pushing her to become a better musician. She also adds, “I am grateful for the opportunities HutchCC has given me!”

2024 Distinguished Dragons: AUSTYN-KAY GROOTE

From Mankato, Kansas, Austyn-Kay Groote is an Elementary Education major who has already begun helping students in the classroom with her part-time job as a paraeducator in a local school district. Beyond helping young students learn, she is a manager for the Hutchinson Community College Volleyball team and a member of Phi Theta Kappa.

Austyn has immersed herself in many volunteer activities that involve working with children including working at the Kansas State Fair in the Education Center, setting up gingerbread houses for the Hutchinson Rec Commission Gingerbread House decorating event, and working as a helper at the Hutchinson Rec Commission Zoo Child Activity. In addition, she has volunteered for other events including helping at the Hutchinson Rec Commission 5k/10k run, taking tickets at the NJCAA Volleyball Tournament, and working at the Kansas State High School basketball tournament. One of her favorite experiences is trying flutternutters in Introduction to Education. She would like to thank Teri Eckhoff for all of her support.

2024 Distinguished Dragons: DIEGO FLORES

From Dodge City, Kansas, Diego Flores is studying Social Work at HutchCC. His nominator writes, “Diego Flores is a dedicated and focused student who is also a positive and energetic person, so when people are around him, they feed off his energy.”

In addition to being a member of the Honors Program, Diego has also taken part in some of the Pep Band activities and has enjoyed attending both Jazz Band and Symphonic Band Concerts to support his peers. He is also the recipient of the Frank and Lelia Smith Scholarship.

One of his favorite HutchCC experiences has been going to the Alley with his friends while the college sponsored a free night for students. He writes, “Everybody had a childlike sort of joy that felt so raw and real. It warmed my heart to see everyone, including myself, so joyful."

He would like to thank Professor Kim Newberry and adds, “After being told by several officers in the Marines that I wouldn’t succeed in college, Kim Newberry helped me realize that I truly am capable of such things. She aided me in becoming a more outgoing individual as well as developing greater confidence with my academic work.”

2024 Distinguished Dragons: JOSEPH COLLINS

From Hutchinson, Kansas, Joseph Collins studied Accounting while at HutchCC. His nominator writes, “Joe AKA Lord Collins is a top-notch student who repeatedly goes above and beyond with his studies as well as life to get the most out of everything that comes his way. Highly charismatic and extremely well-read, he is a natural with others and truly cares about doing what he can to make the world a better place.”

While at HutchCC, he was involved with the Honors Student Council, for which he served as a quad-chair, and the Catholic Connections Club. This Presidential Scholar and member of Phi Theta Kappa was also the recipient of both the Honors Merit Scholarship as well as the Roy & Cindy Broxterman Scholarship. Furthermore, he completed the requirements to graduate with High Honors too.

While Joseph enjoyed being able to meet new people, create new friendships, and develop skills that he will use in his career, his favorite moment at HutchCC was in Accounting I when everything clicked for him. He adds, “That moment made me change majors and set my life in a new direction.” Joseph would like to thank Dr. Ryan Diehl for his involvement in the classroom as well as his advising and work with both the Honors and Phi Theta Kappa communities. He adds, “Dr. Diehl’s leadership is vital to Hutchinson Community College. HutchCC would not be what it is without him.”

2024 Distinguished Dragons: SYDNEY GRAUER

From Marysville, Kansas, Sydney Grauer studied nursing while at HutchCC. Her nominator writes, “Sydney is a dedicated student to her studies and finished her RN degree this spring. In addition to this, Sydney is a residence assistant for campus housing and advocates for her residents. Furthermore, she does her best to ensure every student has an excellent time at HutchCC.”

Sydney has also been very active on campus with her serving as the Student Government Association President. Furthermore, she is a member of the cross country and track and field teams and a member of the Campus Activities Board. Her favorite experiences at HutchCC were getting to meet new people and being able to build connections with students and staff.

She would like to thank all of her professors and classmates. She would also like to thank Dana Hinshaw, Darrell Adams, and especially Shelby Branting. She concludes by writing, “I am blessed to have spent my last three years at Hutch and I am so thankful for the experiences and education I have gained.”

2024 Distinguished Dragons: CANON CAVANAUGH

From Hutchinson, Canon Cavanaugh studied History - Secondary Education while attending HutchCC. His nominator writes, “Canon is always paying attention to what is happening in class and is very willing to share ideas that are worth hearing” before adding, “Canon also spent many hours during the Spring 2024 semester in high school classrooms helping in whatever way he could as well as learning what it’s like to be a teacher.”

In addition to this, he helped with a local school debate and forensic team with his judging tournaments and assisting coaching individual students in different events. Canon, an alumnus of the Buhler Debate and Forensics program, was the recipient of the Wagerle Scholarship. One of his favorite HutchCC experiences was seeing his previous professors this semester in the hallways and having them be both friendly and supportive as well as eager to engage with him about how his studies and life were going.

He would like to thank his advisor and Introduction to Education professor, Mrs. Teri Eckhoff. He writes, “There’s so many classes I had with amazing professors and experiences, and I truly mean that, but without Mrs Eckhoff working with me and understanding my goals, I could’ve easily had a far worse experience.”

Summer 2024 Distinguished Dragon: HAYLEIGH BURKE

From Hanston, Kansas, Hayleigh Burke studied Secondary Education - Science while at HutchCC. Her nominator praised both Hayleigh’s participation in class with her always providing significant information when she takes part in discussions as well as her time management skills that have allowed her to be very successful both in and outside of the classroom.

This Presidential Scholar was repeatedly named to the President’s Honor Roll and also served as a tutor at the Rimmer Learning Resource Center. In addition to this, she was a member of the HutchCC Track and Field Team. One of her favorite HutchCC memories was traveling to Monroe, Louisiana, to compete in hammer throw at the NJCAA Outdoor National Track and Field Championships.

Hayleigh would like to thank Teri Eckhoff, Erin Beavers, Charles Buller, Jessica Owens, and Robert and Ermelinda Spies for all of their support throughout her time at HutchCC.

Are you ready to step into a fun and energetic way to stay active and connect with others? We are thrilled to announce our new Lifelong Learning Newbie Line Dance Class, and we would love for you to join us!

Whether you’ve never danced before or are looking to refresh your skills, our class is designed for absolute beginners. Here’s what you can look forward to:

No Dance Experience Needed: This class is perfect for beginners. We’ll start with the basics and guide you every step of the way.
Learn the Basics: You’ll learn the names and timing of many different steps, setting a solid foundation for your line dancing journey.

Fun and Engaging: Line dancing is a fantastic way to exercise, socialize, and enjoy great music in a friendly and supportive environment.
