A message from MG Michael C. McCurry, USAACE and Fort Novosel commanding general, and the 17th Branch Chief:
During this holiday season, I would like to take a moment to reflect on what we have accomplished this year. Although the days are growing short, this has not served to lessen the tremendous efforts put forth by our professional force of Soldiers, Civilians, and contractors alike. Sadie and I would like to thank each of you for what you do to make Army Aviation and Fort Novosel the home that it is!
It is now time to take a well-earned break to gather with our loved ones and celebrate the holidays. As we each go our own directions to mark the season, I ask you to keep those deployed and away from their families in mind. I also ask you to take care of yourselves, your families, and each other to ensure that we all return safely in the new year, ready to continue our most important work: training the future of Army Aviation.
The holiday season is full of excitement and fun, but that often takes us out of our routines and introduces new risks that we are not as accustomed to mitigating. Please take your time and don’t rush to failure. Make a plan, and if things change, make sure to adjust your plan. If you plan on enjoying a tasty beverage or two, please do so responsibly.
While I wish a joyous holiday to you all, I understand that this time of year can be difficult for some. If you find yourself struggling, please reach out to a friend or supervisor. If unable or you want to talk with someone else, please dial 988 and press 1, or text 838255, to confidentially talk or text to a trained counselor who cares about you. The team isn’t a team without you.
Happy holidays and thank you for all that you do for Army Aviation and our Nation.

Maj. Gen. Michael C. McCurry, USAACE and Fort Novosel commander, stands with former commanders of the 1st Battalion, 145th Aviation Regiment, in commemoration of the regiment's 60th anniversary at Fort Novosel, Alabama, on Aug. 8, 2023. The unit, also know as the "Old Warriors", traces its lineage back to the 145th Combat Aviation Battalion, formed on Sept. 24, 1968, in Vietnam. The unit's slogan is "First in Vietnam", and grew to become one of the largest aviation units serving in that conflict, with five helicopter companies and one fixed wing company. The battalion contributed to the development of air mobile operations, the forerunner of the Army's Air Assault mission set today.
