It’s World Kindness Day, a date that serves as a welcomed reminder that acts of kindness, no matter how small, cause ripples of change that have the power to transform the lives of children, families, and entire communities. Our collective kindness is causing big waves of positive impact and community-driven progress in Nepal! Thanks for your kindness today and everyday.
Today marks the beginning of Tihar, a traditional 5-day festival celebrated throughout Nepal. Children and youth at Olgapuri Children’s Village are particularly excited for the festivities because the final day of Tihar is dedicated to celebrating siblings, during which brothers and sisters show their appreciation for one another by placing special colorful tika on each other’s foreheads and exchanging small gifts.
Beyond providing housing, healthcare, nutrition, and educational opportunities, Olgapuri Children’s Village cultivates much needed stable family relationships. The power of these relationships is truly felt during Tihar celebrations as children come together to honor and bless the siblings they’ve come to know and call family.
Beyond this moving tika ceremony among siblings, Olgapuri residents join their house parents in decorating each house with beautiful lights and flowers, representing abundance and happiness, as well as play games that are specific to Tihar and prepare traditional food to enjoy over the next five days! More photos of Tihar coming soon!
The Ankur Counseling Center celebrated World Mental Health Day on October 10th by organizing a community awareness event at a local school in Bungamati, Chunikhel. We were especially excited about the local government’s collaboration to make this event a success! The event was themed, “Mental Health is a Universal Human Right”, and was attended by students, teachers, and government representatives. The day was filled with interactive presentations, an art competition, face painting, speeches, and activities to uplift the inroads made within schools as well as to educate students on the mental health resources available to them through the Ankur Counseling Center. We’re so amazed by the dedicated team of counselors and therapists who add the holistic pillar of mental health to so many of our programs.
Lalit Gahatraj joined the NYF-Nepal team 11 years ago. As part of the Dalit caste, he has long envisioned uplifting the status of the larger Dalit community. Now, as the coordinator of the Caste Equality Project (in Saptari District)—one of our most ambitious programs to date—he is doing just that!
“This has been a dream of mine for many years. Now my dream is turning into a reality through the Caste Equality Project. Thanks for your support.”
We echo Lalit’s sentiment and want to express how grateful we are for the extended NYF family that is bringing to life our vision of equipping and empowering the Dalit community in Nepal. Stick with us this November as we continue to give thanks for all the work your support makes possible and opportunities for expanding our impact this .
Friends: You may have heard about the 6.4 magnitude earthquake that struck Nepal yesterday, November 3rd, 2023. Reports are still coming in, but we already know that this is the deadliest Nepal earthquake since the Gorkha earthquake in 2015.
Our NYF community mourns with the people of Nepal. We stand with the families who have lost members, and with those who are anxiously awaiting word of their loved ones within the affected areas.
NYF’s remarkable team is monitoring the situation closely, contacting connections in and around Jajarkot and Rukum Districts, to coordinate which roles, if any, NYF will play in providing relief efforts for those most affected, especially children. Our US team will share more information on NYF’s response when that information becomes available.
Search and rescue operations are contending with Nepal’s challenging terrain in the impacted region. Winding, narrow mountain roads have been blocked by landslides caused by the quake. Assessing the full extent of the damage will take time. In the meantime, we are aware that the fast-approaching winter weather will present additional challenges to communities whose infrastructure has been destroyed.
Following the Gorkha earthquake in 2015, NYF played a major role in relief and recovery. We anticipate that the expertise our team built in response to that unprecedented disaster will help us respond to this one.
Thank you for your love for the people of Nepal.
The season of giving thanks is well on its way, and we’d like to start by thanking our community of supporters for the opportunities that you help provide in Nepal. An example of a particularly impactful initiative is NYF’s Vocational Education & Career Counseling Program. Because of you, students are able to prepare for and pursue careers that will positively impact their lives and overall communities for years to come.
Laxmi Ghimire, Program Manager of our Vocational Education & Career Counseling program, is able to witness students’ excitement and drive for these opportunities. She expresses her gratitude for your role in creating brighter futures for graduates. Dhanyabad!
All month long until GivingTuesday on November 28th, we’ll be bringing you a series of messages of gratitude straight from our team in Nepal. Stay tuned for more of these messages and an extra exciting announcement about !

Yesterday was Dashain Tika, the final day of the 10-day Nepali celebration, and NYF President, Som Paneru and his family joined Olga in California to celebrate! Here, he demonstrates the offering of tika to the younger generation, signifying connection, belonging, and blessings of abundance.
Olga was honored to host NYF President, Som Paneru and his family in California to carry on their tradition of celebrating Dashain together. As part of honoring this rich Nepali tradition, Som demonstrated and explained a core element of Dashain Tika, the final day of the 10-day celebration. Across Nepal, elders offer tika to the younger generation to signify connection and belonging and bless them with abundance in the coming years. He then invited Olga to offer tika and bless those who were taking part in the festivities. We're so grateful for these opportunities to participate in, learn about, and appreciate Nepali customs and traditions. Thanks, Som, for bringing a little bit of Nepal with you during your visit!
Since expanding the services of our New Life Center in Kathmandu, we have begun serving a broader range of patients with diverse medical recovery needs, including “Priya” (30 months old) and her mother, “Rani” (24). They were the first medical recovery patients, visiting us this past summer prior to Priya’s cleft palate surgery. The surgery was urgently needed, but Priya needed to gain weight beforehand, so our nutrition specialists implemented a nutrition plan, guiding Rani throughout the entire process.
Priya and Rani belong to the Dalit community (traditionally seen as “untouchable” under Nepal’s caste system). Due to their caste identity, Rani expected extra challenges and the potentially unbearable financial burden of accessing healthcare for her daughter. We’re beyond grateful to be able to support them during this time and showcase these new ways the New Life Center is responding to community needs!

Nepal is bursting with vibrant colors and traditions with Dashain now in full swing! Lasting through October 24th, Dashain is a beautiful 10-day festival celebrating family connections and gratitude for abundance and prosperity. During the festivities, elders give blessings to the younger generations, symbolizing the transfer of power, strength, and wisdom.
Although you may not celebrate Dashain yourself, our global community of supporters has collectively contributed to the sentiment of gratitude and upliftment felt so deeply in Nepal during this time of year. Families in Saptari District who have already received transformative support in our nutrition program are giving thanks for the health of their children. The region’s Dalit community looks to the coming year with hope as we launch the Caste Equality Project. Our most recent Olgapuri Vocational School graduates will celebrate this year’s Dashain with certifications in hand, many of them are already employed in their new fields. And the list of reasons to be grateful goes on!
Your generosity is having a remarkable impact on the lives of thousands of Nepali children and young people—and that impact is only growing! We are so appreciative of your support, and we wish you all joy, good health, and prosperity this Dashain. Dhanyabad!
Have you heard that we’ve expanded the mission of our New Life Center? We are now offering services to children visiting Kathmandu for any critical medical services—not just HIV/AIDS. They can come receive personalized, supportive care free of charge, including monitoring from nurses, nutritious meals created under the recommendation of our dietitians, emergency support, an ambulance service, psychological counseling as-needed, and practical, supportive advice from our staff on how to understand and implement their doctors’ discharge instructions at home. We’re so excited for these new opportunities to reach and welcome more Nepali children and families at NLC!

Happy International Day of the Girl Child! October 11th bookmarks the annual opportunity to uplift efforts to empower and provide opportunities for young girls to reach their full potential. At NYF, we’re proud to be part of the global community working to invest boldly in girls to create the future generation of women who will go on to champion solutions and progress in their communities and beyond!
This is a commitment we fulfill at Olgapuri Children’s Village for children, including young and adolescent girls, who have experienced trauma, loss, and/or lack a stable family life. Working hand-in-hand with the therapists and counselors at the NYF Ankur Counseling Center, we provide individual and group therapy and workshops that encourage and empower young girls to pursue their dreams and become the next generation of change-makers in Nepal.
Today is World Mental Health Day, so we’re taking a moment to recognize and validate the spectrum of mental health challenges that the communities with which we work are facing. We also use today to celebrate the inspiring therapists and counselors specializing in children’s mental health at NYF’s Ankur Counseling Center (like those pictured!), who are passionate about helping children cope with trauma, grief, and loss as well as struggles like ADHD, anxiety, and low self-esteem. They craft and implement age-appropriate workshops on subjects such as bullying, self-care, sexuality, drug abuse, stress management, and so much more! We’re constantly reminded of the heart and creativity they bring to their roles ensuring healthier and brighter futures for children and youth and their families in Nepal.
It’s the first Friday of October, also known as World Smile Day, an entire day devoted to spreading random acts of kindness and making others smile! Thanks to our community of supporters who have given us so many reasons to smile today and everyday. Here are some smiles from girls at Olgapuri Children’s Village.
Because it’s AIDS Awareness Month, we’re taking a moment to celebrate the inroads we’ve made in destigmatizing HIV/AIDS in Nepal! Our awareness and advocacy campaign, which we launched last year, was a huge effort and success in debunking myths about HIV/AIDS. A critical element to this campaign was our HIV/AIDS information and home health guide, written by our very own health-focused teams.
In coordination with other local organizations, we were able to widely distribute the guidebook, allowing us to reach individuals affected by HIV/AIDS, who, because of severe stigmas, had not previously pursued treatment. However, the guidebook rapidly became a commonplace resource—sent home with students to their parents, distributed in doctors’ offices as part of routine checkups, available at women’s group events, etc. The simple fact of such an item being a common possession really helped gradually break down powerful stigmas surrounding the virus!
It’s AIDS Awareness Month! And, we’re celebrating the impact that New Life Center (NLC) has generated in Nepal since it was established in 2006 in Kathmandu to treat pediatric HIV/AIDS. Thanks to our supporters, we have diligently worked alongside other organizations in Nepal to reduce mother-to-child transmission rates and spread awareness and debunk myths about HIV/AIDS. Over the past 15 years, mother-to-child HIV transmission rates have plummeted in Nepal, meaning the number of children requiring specialized care has also declined. This has enabled NYF to recently open this beautiful facility to a wider population of children, expanding the NLC’s mission and reach!
Since 1990, NYF's programs have served over 60,000 Nepali children and young people, providing transformative opportunities in Education, Health, Shelter, and Freedom—plus disaster relief when it's needed most. This work is made possible thanks to the generosity of supporters like you.
At NYF, we've built a reputation for long-lasting positive impact. And the families we serve go on to give back to their communities years into the future. In 2023, we're working to grow our reach with the Caste Equality Project, providing life-affirming services to more children than ever.

In 2008, young mom Rijana and 10-month-old Rinof arrived at our flagship Nutritional Rehabilitation Home (NRH) in Kathmandu with a challenging task: to help Rinof gain enough weight to survive a life-saving surgery.
Rinof and Rijana spent 28 days at the NRH, where our loving staff members developed a special diet for Rinof and taught Rijana all about pediatric nutrition, hygiene, and wellness. Rinof’s surgery went forward with great success.
15 years later...
Rinof is a gifted, healthy, generous young man with a bright future ahead of him. Taller than both of his parents, he's preparing to enter college soon.
Rijana has since been involved in community work with women and children—passing on information she learned at the NRH to mothers and caregivers she works with. Rinof’s father, Naresh, went on to become the NRH’s on-staff driver, managing both the ambulance and regular transportation for children visiting the hospital. When anxious parents ride along, Naresh shows them photos of Rinof and tells his family's story.
Rinof's success story is one of thousands. And it's all possible thanks to supporters like you. Read the full story on our blog!
