Why Isn't Dental Health Considered Primary Medical Care? 25/03/2024

Why Isn't Dental Health Considered Primary Medical Care? Ailments of the mouth can put the body at risk for a slew of other ills. Some practitioners think dentistry should no longer be siloed

23/03/2024

Researchers have long known about the relationship between oral health and overall general health. For example, gum disease has been linked to a number of different health issues, including heart disease and rheumatoid arthritis. Bacteria in the mouth can travel through the system and cause infection in other parts of the body, especially if the immune system has been compromised by disease or medical treatments.

So, while traditional dentistry has long focused on the care of the teeth and gums, wellness-based dentistry recognizes that oral health and general health are interlinked and recommend integrating wellness protocols and strategies into our practices.

You might think you take good care of your teeth. But do you really? 15/08/2023

It’s never to late to improve your oral health. Great info here!

You might think you take good care of your teeth. But do you really? A healthy oral microbiome affects our overall health and doesn’t take much to maintain, but most of us aren’t doing it.

As a dentist, I see inflammation all the time.

Gums that are bleeding, gums that are swollen and sore, gums that are chronically diseased.

The tragic part of the story is that people very rarely know it’s there. Your gums represent the surface area of the skin on your forearm. Imagine a weeping, bleeding wound covering your entire forearm.

That is happening when you have inflamed, bleeding gums.

The problem is we’ve just focussed on cleaning the teeth to stop bleeding gums.

That’s one part of a bigger problem.

Inflammation is a sign that your immune system isn't happy with its environment - if this happens long enough, the immune system can start attacking itself.

Your mouth is an interface between the bacteria (the oral microbiome), and the immune system. The battleground is your teeth and gums, if you have bleeding, inflamed gums, it means microbes and your immune system is at war.

Once the war gets heated up enough (inflammation) the battlegrounds get scarred and erode away. That’s gum disease, and it represents an imbalance in the relationship between microbes and your own body.

Downstream, the biggest battleground of all is located. Your digestive system. With trillions of microbes, speaking with your immune system, 80% of your immune system is formed.

When your GUT barrier is interrupted, ‘leaky gut’ or intestinal permeability ceases to manage what bacteria cross to your immune system.
Your immune system is angry and inflamed all the time, it’s even angry at itself.

That’s an auto-immune disease, which is a symptom of intestinal permeability.

Your mouth is the first place you notice a leaky gut. Leaky gut underlies nearly every chronic inflammatory disorder that humans experience today. From digestive disease to heart disease, to type II diabetes, to obesity, it's all a problem with leaky gut.

Gum disease is an immune system response that eats away at the bone and ligaments that support teeth.

Gum disease IS an autoimmune issue.

Bleeding gums are the first sign of gum disease, don't ignore the signs!

Do you notice your gums bleeding?

Soooo important!

✈️ Which plane would you board? ✈️

This seems like an obvious choice, but what if I told you that legally flight attendants could take the safety and lives of our community into their hands simply because pilots are getting pricey? Or because pilots in the workforce are in high demand currently? Would that make it acceptable to adjust the standards for training and safety?

I ask, as dentistry is now experiencing this conundrum.

The Colorado Dental Association has recently passed resolution #32-23 which will permit dental assistants the scope to periodontally probe and subgingivally scale calculus.

The catalyst: the “lack of hygienists in the state” and “high hygienist wages”.

While this has not been put into full effect yet, the comments on social media between doctors, assistants and hygienists are creating noise about how busy dental assistants already are, the challenges of salary increases to align with inflation + cost of living, and the thoughts around WHY there is a dental hygienist shortage.

I have strong concerns for the standards of health and safety of our community if we are unable to come together as a profession and find a series of safe solutions.

What can you do to show your support for the dental hygiene profession and offer some solutions?

1️⃣ Become a member of the ADHA
2️⃣ Take an active role in your Association
3️⃣ Spread awareness about the training and skills of dental hygienists
4️⃣ Support safe and ethical public health initiatives
5️⃣ Volunteer in at-risk communities to address oral health disparities

What else can we do, together, to create the POSITIVE change we wish to see?

Comment below.

A study published in Circulation found that four virulent oral pathogens - Porphyromonas gingivalis, Treponema denticola, Tannerella forsythia, and Fusobacterium nucleatum - can travel through the bloodstream and contribute to increased risk factors for heart disease, including oxidized LDL, cholesterol, triglycerides, and aortic plaque formation.

Oral is systemic because of the pathogens. When gums become swollen they are leaky and permeable! That means these oral pathogens can easily get into our blood stream, then catch a ride on our 60,000 miles of blood cells!

We are so excited for our CEO, Rachel Wall, to be leading some amazing courses at the ! 🤩

Her course on 3/18 is all about the simple yet powerful ways dentists save lives every single day through screenings that provide patients more information about their health.

Attendees will learn more about life-saving screenings like:

🦷 Blood Pressure Screenings
🦷 Oral Cancer Screenings
🦷 Airway Screenings
🦷 Pathogen Screenings
🦷 Medical History Screenings

By the end, students will be able to determine the priority of these screenings, feel confident administering them, and be knowledgeable enough to explain results to patients.

You can register for this course and more of Rachel’s courses at the meeting here:
