crisis intervention, su***de prevention, and daily phone calls to those in need.
What a lovely day it was, Saturday for a train ride along the Black River & Western Railroad for CONTACT’s Reassurance volunteers. Reassurance offers a telephone program to help reduce loneliness and social isolation among older adults. It’s a free daily outreach service for seniors 60 years and older living in Mercer County. Thank you, Reassurance Volunteers, for serving Mercer County residents, and thank you again Black River & Western Railroad for a memorable day!
CONTACT of Mercer New Jersey 988 Telephone, Chat, and Text Counselor Brett Moran received a TCNJ English Department Award recognizing stellar English students. Brett was given an Honorable Mention for the Peter Wood Creative Writing Award for his poetry manuscript “Take A Seat at My Feet,” a collection of his original poetry. Brett is a member of Sigma Tau Delta, the National English honor society for students at accredited colleges and universities that grant baccalaureate or higher degrees. “I am honored to receive this recognition,” said Brett, who graduated TCNJ in May. “I thank the entire writing community of TCNJ and especially Professor Catie Rosemurgy, whose vision helped me immensely as a writer.” Brett is a resident of Middlesex County and majored in Counseling and Clinical Psychology with a minor in English.

CONTACT's Reassurance program which provides a daily call-in/check-in for Mercer County seniors wishing to speak with someone via a daily phone call, was delighted to participate in the Hamilton Township Senior Center Senior and Veteran Health and Fitness Day event. CONTACT Reassurance Director Paula Hearle and CONTACT Board Member Pat Thayer greeted attendees and met some great folks. We met some wonderful, civic-minded people interested in truly making a difference. To recognize the one-year anniversary of the National Su***de Prevention Lifeline's 988 telephone, chat, and text programs, the New Jersey State Department of Human Services (DHS) held a roundtable forum today in Piscataway, NJ to discuss the transition's success, best practices, and where the NJ 988 su***de prevention lifeline program can advance. DHS Commissioner Sarah Adelman and NJ State Division of Mental Health and Addiction Services (DMHAS) Assistant Commissioner Valerie Mielke presided over the roundtable discussion. Representing CONTACT of Mercer County, NJ was one of the organization's NJ 988 Lifeline Counselors, Jesse Szwed, who talked about his experiences working as a counselor for the program.

CONTACT attended a mental health discussion forum at Rider University led by Congresswoman Bonnie Watson Coleman, Senator Bob Menendez, and Congressman Andy Kim. One of the important topics discussed was the need for increased funding for critical mental health organizations like CONTACT which provides life-saving services to those considering su***de and reaches out for help. All three federal legislators from New Jersey vowed to do their part to help make that happen.
