In memory of my dad! Worked for smoky 30 plus years!

This Friday, I'm turning 80 and celebrating eight decades inspiring people around the world to practice wildfire safety.

But I can only teach wildfire prevention—I need your help! After all, can prevent wildfires. Take the Smokey Bear Pledge at SmokeyBear.com 🤝

Breaking! Big problems on I-35 SB at the Red River. There is a reported hole in the bridge that is causing a significant back up for drivers headed south from Oklahoma into Texas. One lane is reported to be open, one is closed.

PREPARING FOR A TORNADO!

1. Know your area’s tornado risk. In the U.S., the Midwest and the Southeast have a greater risk for tornadoes.

2. Know the signs of a tornado, including a rotating, funnel-shaped cloud, an approaching cloud of debris, or a loud roar like a freight train.

3. Sign up for your community’s warning system. The Emergency Alert System (EAS) and NOAA Weather Radio also provide emergency alerts. If your community has sirens, then become familiar with the warning tone.

4. Pay attention to weather reports. Meteorologists can predict when conditions might be right for a tornado.

5. Identify and practice going to a safe shelter such as a safe room built using FEMA criteria or a storm shelter built to ICC 500 standards. The next best protection is a small, interior, windowless room or basement on the lowest level of a sturdy building.

6. Plan for your pet. They are an important member of your family, so they need to be included in your family’s emergency plan.

7. Prepare for long-term stay at home or sheltering in place by gathering emergency supplies, cleaning supplies, non-perishable foods, water, medical supplies and medication.

STAYING SAFE DURING A TORNADO!

1. Immediately go to a safe location that you have identified.

2. Pay attention to EAS, NOAA Weather Radio, or local alerting systems for current emergency information and instructions.

3. Protect yourself by covering your head or neck with your arms and putting materials such as furniture and blankets around or on top of you.

4. Do not try to outrun a tornado in a vehicle if you are in a car. If you are in a car or outdoors and cannot get to a building, cover your head and neck with your arms and cover your body with a coat or blanket, if possible.

STAYING SAFE AFTER A TORNADO!

1. Pay attention to EAS, NOAA Weather Radio, and local authorities for updated information.

2. Stay clear of fallen power lines or broken utility lines.

3. Contact your healthcare provider if you are sick and need medical attention. Wait for further care instructions and continue to shelter in place.

4. Wear appropriate gear during clean-up such as thick-soled shoes, long pants, and work gloves, use appropriate face coverings or masks if cleaning mold or other debris.

Faith Community Church located at 411 Clayton Ave in Poteau will be open over the next several days as a cold weather warming and resource center for anyone that is need of a place to come inside and warm up.

The warming center will have available: a free hot meal, drinks and snacks, and a place to charge and use electronic devices. Free coats and blankets will also be available as supplies last.

The warming center is a drop in resource and is not intended to be a long term shelter. Warming Center access will be through the ground level door along the sidewalk nearest the intersection of Clayton and Walters. The doors may be locked at various times of the day, call 918-647-3470 for access.

To help support this ministry, there is a great need for donations of new or used coats, gloves, hats, and blankets. We could also use donations of bottled water and snack foods.

All donated resources will be given free to anyone in need. Donations can be dropped off at Faith Community Church or at 633 Recovery Ranch in Howe.

If you have questions or need additional information on this ministry call 918-647-3470 or e-mail: [email protected].
