For today's   plant we have one of our spring favorites!

Got a spot in your garden that has a bit of shade for which you can't quite find the right plant? Let me introduce you to wild geranium (Geranium maculatum), one of several woodland native plants we're selling this year at herbstalk! Not only will we have this plant with us at Herbstalk on both Saturday and Sunday but you can also go to the plant shop on our website and pre-order medicinal and native (or both!) plants for pickup on either day at this year's event in Somerville.

We obviously love providing healing, nourishing plants to folks as often as we can but we also love the fact that many of our plants provide sustenance for our wild friends that share our world with us. Wild geranium is one such plant. The cranesbill, as it is also called, is an important nectar source for multiple species of bees and a host plant for several butterfly species. We absolutely love planting wild geranium every chance we get. Btw, it can handle quite a bit of sun as well, despite generally being a woodland plant!

The return of our beloved means we're back with our !

When Matt asked me how many Marigold seeds we should sow this year I responded with 16374725618.

In a year that has already been marked with so much grief and rage I want us all to be surrounded by flowers. And I pray we may all be held by the beauty and strength of Marigold.

This holy plant is held dear by many as a companion, ally, and guide for journeys through the Shadows. It is also a beloved presence throughout celebrations of Life, Union, and Joy. There's no better plant in our hoophouse for setting the scene of all we'll be bringing to Herbstalk and what we're needing and feeling in our hearts. We are all in these shadows together.

We're also taking every opportunity to honor Joy. Joy, who lives in beloved community with Sorrow. Joy, who sustains and nourishes us in our resistance. Joy, who fuels our work and fight for liberation. Joy, Joy, Joy, Joy, who will remain, no matter what else is here, too.

At Herbstalk we will be gathering donations for friends of friends in Gaza. No matter the balance of despair and hope we remain devoted to our kindred who are facing daily horrors in Rafah and beyond. All eyes on Rafah. All eyes on Congo. All eyes on everyone everywhere. In the words of Masha Vahdat, "May this meadow have flowers." No matter what else the meadow reaps, and all the meadow has seen. May we all have flowers.

It's that time of the year again! Not only is it National CSA Week, which means we're offering $10 off on all levels of our CSA (use code CSAWEEK10 when checking out at our website) but we're also seeding some flats that we'll be placing outside to stratify. Stratification is when seeds go through a period of moist coldness in order to break dormancy and increase germination.

The plants in this flat will be used in our CSA (in its 10th year!) and/or sold from our nursery. We've got the seeds of skullcap, northern sea oats, two types of golden alexander, and Echinacea pallida along with a couple other neat native perennials. Every year, some of our native plants, either as plugs or 4" pots, find their way onto our availability list for CSA members to pickup as part of their share and add to their garden. We love getting reports from CSA members of plants thriving and bringing beauty along with sustenance and habitat for our non-human community members out there!

🌈 CSA SALE!! 🌈 It's National CSA Week! We're offering $10 off on all csa shares, whether being purchased for yourself or as a gift for someone else. This year, the $10 discount is especially fitting, as we're celebrating our 10th season!

The sale starts right now and continues through next Monday, February 26th. All you have to do to get your $10 off is enter CSAWEEK10 in the discount field when purchasing any CSA share on our website, whether it's Family, Culinary, Student, or Herbalist-sized. Thank you so much for your dearly appreciated support!

The timing for this week of awareness is perfect. For many farmers—ourselves included—this is the leanest part of the year, so funds from CSA sales go an exceptionally long way toward ordering seeds, plant plugs, and other important supplies we need as we prep for this milestone of a growing season.

We wish you and yours a happy and peaceful 2024! We're already hard at work and excited to jump into the new season, as we begin planning and getting supplies and seeds together for the 2024 CSA, for which sign-ups are now open! (Link in bio!)

The seeds we'll be getting will include those of Verbascum bombyciferum, which proved to be a popular medicinal and ornamental potted plant offered in the CSA last year. These mullein will start their year as the incredibly fuzzy little seedlings seen here before being stepped up to 4" pots and moved into our hoop house as the temps warm. Then, along with other potted plants and bunches of fresh and dried medicinal and culinary herbs, it will be available to order by CSA members!

Herb bunches and plants will be available to grab every other week this year from June through October at our pickup locations in Cambridge, JP, Canton, Hudson, and Norfolk.

Friends! I invite you to join our Patreon to download our Samhain Zine. It's filled with writings on ways to honor this autumnal season, including how to work with Mugwort, create an ancestor altar, gently tuck your garden to bed, musings on our friend, the Crow, and more. You can join for as little as $3 per month, and can cancel at any point. Visit the link in our bio to learn more ✨

Here's a more detailed preview of this season's zine:

AN INTRODUCTION TO SAMHAIN
Just as conception and gestation begin in the darkness of the womb, the Celtic New Year begins in the darkness, too. Here the new cycle of the year rests and roots until it emerges with the growing light of the spring and summer sun.

RITUALS FOR SAMHAIN
We can show our gratitude for the abundance of the earth’s gifts by making a harvest offering to the land upon which we live. Choose a spot that is special to you — whether it’s your own garden or an outdoor public space. Gather together foods and plants that represent the abundance of the harvest season — roots, gourds, squash, berries, apples, rosehips, acorns or other nuts, and any beautiful flowers or leaves that you may have access to...

SEASONAL MUSINGS & OBSERVATIONS

the stones, the land, ever unveiling
our hands bearing
the tinder and kindling and eye.

ANIMAL GUARDIAN: THE CROW
I encourage—nay, implore!—you to get to know the Ravens and Crows in your neighborhood. You can start meeting individuals by offering them little gifts. They adore peanuts and many say (and some dispute!) that they love shiny objects, too. Sometimes it takes awhile for them to warm up to you. Sometimes they embrace what you give with near immediacy. No matter what I encourage steadfastness and patience.

PLANT GUARDIAN: MUGWORT
Although I loved my new city home, I greatly missed natural open spaces, and forests, and wild places. So I found consolation in a different sort of wildness: in the untamed, weedy plants that sprout up in the neglected areas of town. Of all of these – the dandelions, chickweeds, shepherd’s purses and burdocks that I came to know and love – mugwort was the one to capture me the most.

Our Story

Here at Muddy River Herbals our number one mission is to grow healing plants that sustain New England's people and landscapes. We are devoted to ecological growing methods that are in rhythm with the environments of eastern Massachusetts and the wild species with whom we share our fields. The herbs that we tend are lovingly cared for from the moment we sow them in the soil to the time that we place them in your hands.

* * *

Owner and founder Jenny Hauf started Muddy River Herbals in 2015 in Dracut, Massachusetts, on a quarter acre plot on the Captain John Ogonowski Memorial Preservation Farmland. The New Entry Sustainable Farming Project operates the land and leases it to to several small farmers. Captain Ogonowski, one of the pilots killed on September 11th, grew up in Dracut and had a passion for farmland. In life he fought to keep it out of the hands of developers, and after death the Ogonowski family took up his cause. It was an honor to farm on soil so loved.

In January of 2017 Matt Warren, Jenny’s husband, joined the farm and they moved the tiny farm to a full acre of land on the beautiful Eleanor Cabot Bradley Estate in Canton. This property has been well acquainted with botanical delights for over a century. Along with our herb farm it is home to formal gardens, glorious witch hazels, ancient apple trees, and our friends at Brookwood Community Farm (not to mention a decadent mansion and three miles of gorgeous trails). While we dearly loved Dracut we are overjoyed to be growing on land that is lush, storied, rich, and so much closer to our Boston community.
