that our ship, USS Gerald R. Ford, made history in the nuclear field? As the first new U.S. aircraft carrier designed in more than 40 years, Gerald R. Ford was built with a new nuclear plant (A1B reactor) and the ability to generate nearly three times the amount of electrical power compared to the previous class of aircraft carriers.

Sailors serving aboard Gerald R. Ford in the ship's reactor department are proud to be part of this Naval Reactors milestone.

Today, we reflect on those we've lost in service to our Nation and stand in reverence and gratitude for all they gave. 🇺🇸⚓️

On a Sunday morning in May 2021, Naval Aircrewman (Helicopter) 1st Class Cale Foy was off duty, hiking with his wife and children near the tide pools at Point Loma in San Diego. A boat suddenly appeared, driven by wind and rough seas into the rocky coast line. 5- to 8-foot waves smashed the boat to pieces against the rocks. Foy and his family watched as over 30 people spilled out of the boat and into the water. As a Navy Rescue Swimmer, Foy knew he couldn't just stand there.

Wearing nothing but his shirt, jeans, and hiking boots, Foy ran half a mile to a trail leading down to the water where he caught up with another service member and they plunged into the frigid ocean. He fought the violent surf swimming toward the victims. He helped several closer to shore reach land before riding a rip current out toward the destroyed boat. A large portion of the cabin remained afloat. For 90 minutes, Foy swam back and forth, zigzagging through the fuel-covered and debris-filled sea, pulling at least 5 victims to the relative safety of the floating cabin roof.

He continued helping others and collecting dead bodies until another boat finally arrived on scene. He helped 2 more people out of the water, then climbed aboard and performed CPR on one victim while they sped toward the port in San Diego. He remained at the dock for several hours, where he found all the victims he'd rescued from the water. Because of Foy's outstanding efforts, only 3 of the 32 people aboard the boat were killed in the tragedy.

Foy received the Navy and Marine Corps Medal for his actions that day. He was recently named the Military Times 2022 Sailor of the Year.
