Bill Hingston one of my favorite shots! VIR 2019 SCCA Runoffs!
Wow what an amazing and fun time down at El Paso County Raceway, Calhan, Colorado. BST Promotions. I was given the chance to run a dirt 1/4 mile oval track for my first time ever! Mike Varra rescued this old Monte Carlo a short while ago that had been sitting for 14 years untouched. We got a double barrel carb put on to be legal and we had to rebuild the shifting linkage because we had no 3rd or 4th gear. After that we put air in the tires and went to race with absolutely zero shakedown or testing!
We showed up to the track in time to help pack down the track with a few low speed laps. As soon as I got on track I felt like Lightning McQueen when he entered the the demolition derby. “What the hell did I get myself into” I said to myself as the car was all over the place just spinning tires trying to keep in line.
Up next we got ready for some hot laps! My first time at pace and no idea what I’m doing lol. I went out and got into 3rd gear and watched the rest of the group leave me in the dust. After the session a fellow competitor came up and asked us about our gearing and what gear I was in. He let me know just stay in 4th and never shift. Then he looked at our tires and laughed and asked what psi we were running. Mike and I looked at eachother and laughed as Mike told him 30ish all the way around. He looked at us like we were fools and told us to drive to his pits and he was going to help. After taking the psi down to what was recommended we were ready for the first heat race and qualifier for the Trophy dash!
I lined up in 6th place outside 3rd row in the heat race and as soon as the green flag flew I started pushing. With only 8 laps in the heat I knew I had to be top 3 to get into the trophy race so I started to make moves. When I got up to third I was behind the mustang and tried to take the inside lane into turn 1 but that door got shut in a hurry and popped a couple rivets on our front bumper letting it flap in the wind. I followed for the remainder of the lap setting him up for the same pass coming out of turn 2 this time and rocked past him and hunted the leader in his nova. I saw the white flag and tried to get it done but finished side by side just behind in 2nd place!!!
Starting the trophy dash was something completely new to me as they had all top 6 cars on the front straight in grid order as they introduced the drivers. As they got to me and announced it was my first time out ever the crowd seemed to love it and I had never been cheered on by so many people. I was grided in 3rd place inside 2nd row and as soon as the flag dropped we were off again. I quickly tried to make a move and my hood came up and it startled me so I maintained pace and place behind the mustang and fell in line for the first 2 laps then made my move and watched as the hood went and covered the entire windshield area besides a little 6”x9” hole on the drivers side, I stayed in it looking for a flag but none came and I hunted my way back to 2nd as I gapped the rest of the grid and hunted down the leader when the white flag came out on lap 7 I tried to get up with him but no dice and took 2nd again.
Finally we qualified 2nd for the main event 30 lap race under the lights. I started outside front row! As the flag dropped I fell into 4th on the first lap and by lap 3 had the inside lane in turn 1&2 and hooked and shot past 3rd and 2nd down the back stretch as my rear end gave out and ended our night.
All in all I had so much fun and can’t wait to do it again!! Adding racing disciplines to the resume to help make a more well rounded driver over all!!
Thank you to Varra Family Racing and BreakLoose Racing for the support and ride! Thank you Kristin Sullivan my smokin hot wife for enjoying it with me! Mike Varra for the opportunity and support for believing in me!!
We will do it again!
Any of my friends have or know of a SCCA T3 car for rent for the runoffs. Had some issues that may not be resolved with the 350z in time!
SHE LIVES
I want to give a huge shout out to our newest driver that started this season and has just come back from a broken leg and ankle right after school. Aaron Thomas Lusk he came out for his first full weekend racing and blew us away. He qualified on pole in class both Saturday and Sunday! He brought home some well earned and hard fought hardware with a podium 3rd place in saturdays main race. He has so much potential and we are excited to see how this next season unfolds with so many great drivers in his class he is showing why we are so proud to have him enjoying what he loves with us!
We look forward to seeing everyone next weekend! You pry don’t know this about our family but Ian Sullivan and I homeschool our kids! Everyone in our homeschool community always thinks it’s so neat that he is involved with Colorado Region SCCA so I created an event to invite some little kids to the races Sunday to see everyone doing what they love! Most have never seen a race car or race! You’ll see the our kids and I walking around with some new faces showing them around and teaching them a little about racing! If you have a spare moment wave us over and show off your car!
What an amazing weekend down at La Junta Raceway - Victory Motorsports with a huge shout out to Allan Lasater for providing a great weekend hosting Colorado Region SCCA for our competition driver school as well as the time trials school along with our regions first race of the year Ice Breaker!
There was a great turn out for new wheel to wheel racers with a variety of cars from 84 Mazda RX7s to a C5 corvette to Spec Miatas with a WRX STI in the mix. All of the students did great with the help of the chief instructor Ted Winning and personal instructors Robert Melanson, Lothar Kremer, and our own Ian Sullivan.
The weekend wouldn't have been possible without the amazing help fr and m Jerry Oleson so that Ian could instruct still after having major issues with the T3 car, Jerry stepped up and allowed Ian to utilize the amazing 62 Austin Healey Sprite.
Our newest driver Aaron Thomas Lusk was piloting the white and purple number 84 S7 in school and we couldn't have been more pleased with his abilities in picking up not only the line but awareness that is needed in running multiclass races being in a slower class. He is already on pace to mix it up in the front of the pack in class! Unfortunately he was unable to stay for the racing sunday, but in good fashion Mike Varra had Ian drive the S7 for all 3 races sunday!
David Muramoto had a small issue on the GT3 350Z on thursday in testing and was able to get it corrected for Saturday's races, but retired due to a oiling issue early and was done for the weekend. Hoping to get our big sponsor ready to race before the next race at Pueblo.
Ian had an eventful day sunday for the first time in a S7 car to say the least. Qualifying started out great feeling the car and he managed to put it on 3rd out of 7 in class. Race 1 was off to a great start where Robert had pulled on the pack with Mark leading everyone in and Matt pulling Ian on the start. It took Ian about 4 laps to figure out where to make the move on Matt with Christian hot on their heels. About lap 5 Robert had spun in the back of the track with Mark hunting down a T3 solstice Ian was hot on Mark's heels when 2 laps before the end of the race he ran out of gas sadly. Race 2 was good on the start and Ian ran into a couple issues but held a solid 3rd place behind Robert and Mark in a nice tight line. Race 3 was as close of a race as it could have been for the podium, with a struggling T3 solstice that broke up the group right away that caused a battle for the books between Christian and Ian. They ran bumper to bumper the entire race and went side by side around every corner on track multiple times with absolutely zero contact! Driving through lap traffic splitting them and fighting that pesky T3 it came down to a last lap show down with a drag down the front straight with Christian running and Ian chasing into turn 3 Ian closed in and set up for turn 5 to make his run again and did great as Ian won the drag and the line into turns 6 and 7, Christian however was able to get a run up the inside out of 7 and it came down to 1/1000th of a second bumper to bumper and Ian was able to hold 3rd! That was a double podium day for the team!!
Huge shout out to Nick Leone for running crew on all cars! David Muramoto for everything he has helped with, Jerry Oleson for being the constant rockstar, Mike Vara for all the hard work and team help, Aaron Lusk for coming out and giving it his all, Niki Larue for the amazing help always, BLR Garage for making sure we race, Mark and Christian Miller as well as Robert Melanson for the amazing racing, Castle Rock Auctions for the constant support, and ofcourse Colorado region SCCA for letting us do this with them!!
Aaron Thomas Lusk graduated with flying colors from school but was unable to race Sunday. So Ian Sullivan took the chance to try out Aarons Mazda for the first time while his Z is down for repairs this weekend.
Mike Varra came down to support the team with his boys and we look forward to him racing next time!
Nicholas Leone was clutch as always as the right hand man for not only our team but anyone in the pits needing a hand!
Great weekend at the track excited for more!
It has been a windy time in La Junta! We got down Thursday night for driving school Friday. Ian’s teaching this year and our new driver Aaron is in school.
Ian’s Z he’s running this year ran into some problems before we left for the weekend but Jerry was generous enough to loan his car for Ian to teach. Aaron is doing great and learning fast! Can’t wait to see how his first race goes Sunday!
We will be in LaJunta for this weekends race! Excited to start the year with Ian Sullivan, Nicholas Leone, Mike Varra and Aaron Thomas Lusk racing some new cars. Come out to support the team or tune in for updates!
