Bella needs a foster or adopter asap.
We aren’t sure about how she became a stray but she did have an owner at one time because we traced her chip. Like so many cats we think she was just let go to fend for herself. Thankfully a Good Samaritan found her, gave her initial veterinary care and shelter in an enclosed screened porch.

Bella was recently spayed and brought UTD on shots by us through our friends at KIND Veterinary Care Center. Bella is FIV- and being treated for hook and round worms.

We need to find a home for her soon because she will not be able to stay in an outdoor porch with colder weather coming.

Bella is about 3 years old and on the smaller side. We have no back story so we have no idea how she is with other cats or dogs but she is very sweet and affectionate.

Please consider giving Bella a home where she will be given the love and comfort that she was once accustomed to.

Thank you to all who came together to get our very special boy Cooper to and from the vet!!
Cooper was not acting himself yesterday so we were a bit worried.

Our trainer Tara whisked him off to our friends at Rockaway Animal Hospital who gave him a thorough check. Thank you to Dr Ascot for taking such care of Cooper !!

We have had intermittent problems with this little beagle’s ears and sure enough he had an ear infection. He is back with us and feeling much better. Thank you to our volunteer Lesley for giving Cooper a ride home!!

We love you Cooper and are so thankful to our team for all of their love and devotion ❤️❤️

Our boxer pit mix is 4 years old and still waiting for a home of her own.
Kyla is great on leash and well behaved in the home. She is playful and just loves her toys!!

Kyla must be an only dog although we have had great success on pack walks. She is a vocal player so she will need a family who understands that. Kyla is adored by us all and she adores us right back !!

Little Tamale is doing great in his forever home and has made his sister very happy.
He is starting puppy training with Ally from Learning Tails and we know he will do well!!

Great news - a home has been found

One of our adopters reached out to us to see if we could help with her Grandmother’s cat. Her Grandmother moved into assisted living and Frizzle cannot accompany her.

He is 6 years old, UTD , neutered and FIV-
Frizzle is very affectionate and loving. He has not lived with dogs or cats so would likely be best as an only cat.

The commitment we make to our dogs lasts forever ❤️❤️❤️
When we take a dog into our rescue we are never quite sure what to expect.
Many of our dogs have come to us to save them from euthanization in the shelter or by their owners.
We believe in giving them all a chance.

We have a fondness for seniors and believe that they do not deserve to end up in the already overcrowded NJ shelter system - we take as many as we can and keep them with us in our hospice program.
We believe every dog should leave this world surrounded by love.

We currently care for multiple dogs who may never leave us - some are pictured below. It’s okay because they are a part of our family and we love them.

Our charter is to give the dogs we take into rescue the best possible life we can. The dogs that remain with us get the best of veterinary care and training.

Rocco(white shepherd) joined us from the AHS Newark at 14 - with daily medication - great vet care and and a loving foster family - he has surpassed our expectations. He is now 15 and a half !!

Rusty (Apricot poodle) had an uncertain fate at the shelter due to some pretty rough behavior.
He remains with us and is working with our trainers.

Martha(small white poodle ) we rescued her at age 13 over a year ago from AHS Newark and she remains in our hospice program with a heart condition.

Cooper is a beagle who has been with us for 4 years now after he was facing euthanasia when his owners brought him to one of our vets. They said he was unpredictable and he can be. We give him a wonderful life with lots of love, walks, playtime, enrichment and weekly training sessions.

The cost of taking care of our family is often overwhelming at times but we would not have it any other way

Any time spent with Kyla is time well spent !! ❤️

Today Kyla had a nail trim and a quick check up at Purfurred Veterinary Care and she was a great patient!! Afterwards it was off to Pet Smart for some toys and treats !! 🍡🍡

Kyla is always so happy to be out and about and just loves every single person she meets!! She will need to be an only dog - but easily passes by dogs in stores and on walks. Kyla was likely never socialized with them as a puppy - she just isn’t sure how to interact with them.

We truly treasure this girl - no matter how many times she is let down by people she never gives up. Kyla knows that there will be someone soon that will give her the love and devotion that will match what she is willing to share❤️❤️

If you have an only dog home and just a bit of large dog experience- we may have just the dog for you ❤️

Sometimes all it takes is a picture 📸📸

In July of 2023 we were sent this picture of a stray found in pretty bad shape. We took one look and knew she was coming our way.
After some great veterinary care she made her way to NJ and settled into her loving foster home!!

Today marked a full year since Faline found her forever home and they cannot imagine their lives without her.
They say a picture speaks a thousand words and we believe that’s true! Faline is a happy girl and we are so grateful that she found such a wonderful home!!

Two hearts ❤️❤️
The loss of your family can be devastating to dogs. Thankfully these two did not have to lose each other.

We are grateful to their family for taking two dogs and not just one so that these dogs could rewrite their story together❤️❤️

We would also like to thank their foster family for keeping them safe and stepping up when they needed help.

We couldn’t be happier about this very happy ending and to welcome Rosie and Yoda’s family into our NJSH family

When we rescued Milo last summer from the Northern Ocean County Animal Shelter we imagined he would be with us a short time.

Milo has proved to be a challenge with both his health and his behavior. We battled urinary issues . We have gotten that under control but Milo still struggles with seperation anxiety.

Milo is wonderful with dogs, kids and people. He can be reactive on leash but his fosters have worked very hard on that too!!

Milo’s fosters have been working with a trainer at their own expense as not to burden the rescue. We truly appreciate all of the work they have done with Milo. He is often at doggie day care and with babysitters but he is loved by his family❤️❤️

We hope in time Milo will realize that he doesn’t have to be afraid because someone will always be back for him❤️❤️

It’s a happy day for us !! The last of our Cinco De Mayo pups went home🏡🏡

Corona joined our alumni Fergus who was one of Christina and Skittles puppies !!
They were looking to get a second dog and hoped we could help them find them a perfect fit. We knew when they met Corona at the OMG event a few weeks ago that he might be the one!!

Thank you to our foster mom Sue for taking such good care of Corona and volunteer Lesley for her help with the meet and greet!!

We know Corona is one lucky little puppy and will always have lots of love and attention❤️❤️

🥘In addition to the Tavern’s seasonal American menu they are offering turkey stew (for humans and their dogs) and fresh-baked biscuits for dogs – prepared in-house!

Little Wheezy joined us in July of last year. She was surrendered to AHS Newark when her owner could no longer care for her.

Wheezy has been a part of our hospice program ever since. We have struggled trying to get her Cushings under control but she has been progressing under the loving care of Dr Kahn at Rockaway Animal Hospital.

Wheezy is the type of dog that could graduate from our program and we think she would do well in a very quiet environment. Although she lives with dogs we think it would be great if she could be the queen of her castle.

Wheezy will always be taken care of by NJSH for her veterinary needs for whatever time she has.
We thank her foster mom for taking such good care of her❤️❤️❤️
We currently have 8 dogs in our hospice program all are NJ Shelter dogs. We love them like crazy!!

It’s a beautiful summer day and the perfect time for a pupdate on Luna!!

Luna formally Emma Beach was found all alone on 4Th of July weekend last year in the parking lot of the beach in Ocean County, NJ . She was just a puppy and the shelter thought for sure someone would be looking but no one ever came.

This pretty girl is beyond loved by her dads and living a happy life as a city kid!! She does spend her weekends at the beach though!!

Why rescue a dog??
So many dogs who have done absolutely nothing wrong are waiting at our local shelters - just waiting for a second chance.

Today is Summer’s Gotcha Day !!! A year ago she sat trembling in her cage when her family had no choice but to surrender her after they lost their home.

Please choose to adopt and look at the change you can make. There is nothing quite so wonderful as the love of a dog who was given a second chance !!

We are truly grateful to her family for giving her such a beautiful life !! Happy Gotcha Day Summer !!
