It's interesting to note the shift in college admissions policies toward what some describe as "Test Preferred" rather than "Test Optional." This suggests that while not submitting test scores is still a viable option, students who do submit scores might have an advantage in terms of admission rates. One of the most striking examples weโve come across recently is at Purdue, where 97% of their EA admissions were students who submitted test scores!
Admissions teams have record numbers of applications to sift through and, in many cases, very little to differentiate their candidates. Forbes shares statistics for the 2023-24 academic year, revealing a 30% spike in total applications compared to the pre-Covid 2019-20 academic year. Within a similar timeframe, the percentage of students submitting test scores witnessed a notable decline from 74% to approximately 44%. This shift is indicative of the impact of Test Optional policies, where the choice not to submit scores has broadened the applicant pools at many schools, eliminating a traditional benchmark that might have previously served as a barrier to consideration. In such a competitive environment, having a strong SAT or ACT score can indeed provide applicants with a way to stand out amidst the increasing application numbers.
At Club Z!, we are committed to providing the most individualized SAT prep experience for our families so we can help students put together their strongest possible college admissions portfolio. Our program starts with a free initial consultation and diagnostic test that allow us to match the student with highly-qualified tutors that will be a perfect fit all-around for them. Sessions are customized to meet the specific needs of each student, focusing on content areas and strategies that will help them make the most progress throughout their time with us. All of our tutors are local, experienced, and experts on the new Digital SAT.
Reach out by phone or email to start the conversation. Consultations are always free and our team is happy to share our expertise and help you put together the best plan for your family.

With several years of test-optional admissions data to look at now, college admissions teams and researchers are beginning to see that eliminating this requirement may not be leveling the playing field in the way they had hoped.
"Standardized tests are less biased than many other parts of the college application process, like extracurricular activities, college essays and teacher recommendations. An admissions system that drops mandatory tests in favor of these other factors gives big advantages to affluent students. Test scores, by contrast, seem to be useful at identifying students from disadvantaged backgrounds who have enormous potential, even if their scores arenโt quite as high on average as the those of well-off applicants."
In addition, test scores remain the best predictor of college success for both advantaged and disadvantaged students, leading more and more admissions teams to accept a much higher percentage of students who did submit test scores than those who did not.
Whether or not this emerging data sparks a trend back toward mandatory testing requirements, the fact remains that Optional equals Opportunity, and we at Club Z! of Northborough strongly encourage our students to take advantage of the chance to shine on their admissions tests. We have experts on staff that can help you put together a testing plan that makes sense and that will give you the best opportunity to succeed.
The Morning: The misleading SAT debate Good morning. Weโre covering the debate over standardized tests in college admissions โ as well as Israel, artificial intelligence and the Golden Globes.
The conversation around Test Optional remains a hot topic in college admissions and we at Club Z! Tutoring of Northborough are committed to keeping up to date with the most accurate information out there.
More and more, we are hearing from admissions teams at Test Optional schools that those students who do submit strong test scores are being admitted at a higher rate than their peers who do not submit scores.
This Forbes article, along with the additional insight from our colleagues at College Bound, Career Ready LLC, dives into this topic and is a must-read for current juniors in high school who are currently weighing their options.
If you have questions about all this or if your student needs some help preparing for the upcoming spring test so that they can put their best foot forward, our team at Club Z! would love to talk with you. Give us a call to discuss how we can put together a customized, one-on-one test prep plan for you.
Should You Still Take The SAT Or ACT For "Test Optional" Colleges? Many colleges around the country dropped the SAT or ACT requirement for admissions, and the result has been different than expected. What should you do as a student?

Interesting read as we await the release of PSAT scores tomorrow!
"Academic rigor is optional... But optional does not mean without impact." Although test-optional is the new normal in college admissions, data suggests that most schools are not test-blind. Boston College's website notes that students who do not submit test scores will have "one less credential to be considered by the Admissions Committee" and we know that students without test scores made up 42% of their applicants, but only 26% of their admissions.
The message here - seize those optional opportunities!
In college admissions, โtest-optionalโ is the new normal Story at a glance The share of college applicants who submit test scores has plunged since pre-pandemic times. Fewer than half of early applicants this fall submitted scores from the SAT or ACT, deโฆ
