When Ann unexpectedly collapsed at an airport, her life hung in the balance.

When Chelsea struggled with extreme fatigue and difficulty breathing, her doctor revealed that her hemoglobin had plummeted to dangerously low levels.

She needed three units of blood and was diagnosed with hemolytic anemia and Paroxysmal Nocturnal Hemoglobinuria (PNH). Throughout her journey, Chelsea required five more blood transfusions.

As an avid hiker, Chelsea is incredibly thankful to the blood donors who gave her the energy to get back on the trails.

"Blood has given me my life back," Chelsea said. "It’s something I didn’t necessarily appreciate until now. I couldn’t hike last year and thought I might never be able to do it again."

It's National Eat Your Beans Day! While many folks celebrate foods like beans and spinach for their iron content, not all iron is the same.

There are two forms of dietary iron: heme and nonheme.

Your body absorbs the most iron from heme sources, found in animal foods that originally contained hemoglobin. Nonheme iron, which comes from plant sources, doesn’t absorb all that well in the body. Even the once-heralded spinach, though a healthy vegetable overall, has low bioavailability (a fancy way of saying that you should look elsewhere for your iron).

If you want to maximize your iron absorption, consume iron-rich foods along with plenty of vitamin C-rich foods, such as broccoli, kale, mangos, kiwi or orange juice. You can also pair foods high in nonheme iron with fish, beef or poultry.

In June of 2022, Paul and Aimee were in the right place at the right time.

While enjoying a day at the beach, they heard cries for help from a swimmer in distress. Without hesitation, they paddled through bloodied waters to rescue Steve, who was severely injured by a great white shark.

Their bravery and teamwork didn’t end there. Paul, a dedicated police officer, immediately called 911 and began coordinating efforts, and Aimee, a compassionate oncology nurse, used her medical knowledge to stabilize Steve. Together, they played a vital role in his survival.

Steve received 28 blood transfusions during surgery, highlighting the lifesaving power of blood donations.

Fast forward to 2024, Aimee and Paul chose to honor the second anniversary of that dramatic day—and their 14th wedding anniversary—by donating blood. They know firsthand how vital blood donations are needed to give back in a meaningful way.

Our Las Vegas campus Physical Therapist Assistant program recently hosted a blood drive through Vitalant. As a result of the donations, they were able to solicit 25 blood donors and collect 75 pints of blood. At just 3 years old, Delta was diagnosed with B Cell Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia.

Right after hearing this life-changing news, she was scheduled for her first surgery to get the port needed for her chemotherapy. But leukemia had taken over so quickly that Delta didn’t have enough red blood cells or platelets for the surgery and needed transfusions immediately.

Throughout her journey, Delta has needed regular transfusions to keep fighting this terrible disease alongside her chemotherapy treatments.

“Without blood and platelet donors, our daughter wouldn’t be here and wouldn’t be able to keep fighting this cancer,” her family shares.

While Delta is still in the fight, she shares a message for those who : “Thank you for helping save my life and the lives of many children just like me!”
