Regarding releasing oral ties...at any age. I completely agree with this.

First rule in the healthcare professions is to do no harm!

Many providers perform a tongue tie release without any functional evaluation and support on board. They see and feel a frenulum and hear the often desperate parents explain symptoms and their story. They perform the procedure under the impression that this will help.

While this *can* be helpful, it can actually be harmful.

Doctors and Dentists are just that. They are not lactation consultants, feeding, speech, or myofunctional therapists. Unless they have additional education, license, certifications, and scope of practice to perform a functional evaluation and train proper function, a release should not happen without the appropriate functional professional on the team.

Without the functional evaluation, it cannot be determined if a tongue tie is contributing to dysfunction and symptoms. This mindset leads to unnecessary procedures and unprepared patients and parents. It can be harmful and the dysfunction be magnified. Not to mention the emotional turmoil for a family going through it and not having support.

The standard of care is this. Please consider it.
