At just over 1,000,000 Square Feet, the Louisville VA Hospital in Louisville, KY. will be an impressive facility. It features two six-story wings and a central utility plant using 750 SidePlate connections to meet its progressive collapse requirements! We had a chance to catch up with the team at Derr & Isbell Construction LLC, as one wing was in construction.

We always enjoy working on projects with the great teams at BHB Structural Engineers - Utah, Idaho and the University of Utah, and the HELIX Office Building was no exception. Utilizing SidePlate PLUS connections to meet the demands of a high-seismic region, the facility houses 1200 employees and 400 medical school students. With a need for open spaces for collaboration, the strength of SidePlate’s connections played into the greater spans achieved between columns while maintaining the strength required for life safety.

This eight-story, 420,000 square-foot hospital was the very first SidePlate PLUS Field-Bolted Connection Design project approved by HCAI (California Department of Health Care Access and Information). It is a huge advancement as it represents the elimination of field welding on HCAI projects, which will speed up construction significantly, allowing the construction team to complete the hospital faster, making rooms for patients available sooner. We appreciated the opportunity to work with McCarthy Building Companies, Inc., KPFF San Diego, and Schuff Steel on such an important building in the Southern California region.

We had a successful three days at in Charlotte, showcasing our SidePlate All-Bolted Connection Design.

The September edition of Modern Steel Construction, highlights the Denver Health Project - Our first SidePlate Field-Bolted project in Colorado! In the early stages of design, the team evaluated costs, schedule, design, etc, and decided that the SidePlate Field-Bolted Connection Designs were the best fit for the project. The use of SidePlate sped up the construction schedule, eliminated temperature concerns in terms of both concrete and field welding, and created flexibility for potential future renovations and expansions. Our partner, Turner Construction Company determined the schedule was shortened by six weeks and resulted in approximately $500,000 in savings.

A big congrats to Billy Tarasevic on his recent promotion! Starting out an Engineering Intern for SidePlate Connection Designs in 2012, Billy has since honed his skills and built his expertise while working on a variety of challenging projects.

His keen interest and depth of knowledge in steel construction are valued by customers and colleagues alike.

MiTek solutions help complete the Spectrum Terrace - a three phase project working to transform the city of Irvine, CA, into an integrated live/work community. SidePlate Connection Designs helped to reduce the overall tonnage, minimize required connections, and accelerate er****on time. Benson Curtain Wall & Glass provided a comprehensive façade construction service including system design, estimating, materials selection, engineering, prototype testing, project management, and site installation.

We’re very pleased to welcome Cory Byrd as our New Southeast Regional Engineer.

Cory has been practicing structural engineering for just over 20 years in many different roles from Project Engineer, Manager, Business Development, to Engineer of Record. He is currently a licensed Professional Engineer in 22 states and a licensed Structural Engineer in Illinois. Cory earned his bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering from Southern Illinois University at Carbondale and resides in central Florida.
