When I was 22 I lived in Dublin for a short while, so strange and yet familiar to be back now with my 20yr old who is newly living here.

What is Kabbalah?
What is the Omer?
What are the 7 Sephirot? Come on the 49 journey with me, one week at a time. Register

24/04/2024

It’s the first day of the omer. You know what that means? love upon love. Chesed of chesed. Part of the journey of becoming free is counting these 49 days between Passover and Shevuot. It wasn’t always chesed of chesed, love of love, it was agrarian. It was connected to land. We counted our sheafs of barley. We counted each day, praying that soon we would have enough to start over. springtime came to tell us to start all over again. Starting with Passover, after the full moon, each night we count one grain of barley each day for seven weeks. at the culmination of seven weeks, we reveal the fruits of our first harvest and prepare a new grain offering. wheat. we bake loaves, celebrating the queen of heaven, and bring these loaves to the temple. The kabbalists, in exile, and in Palestine, 500 yrs ago, if not more, instructed us to count each day of the omer through the sephirot in the tree of life. Seven weeks, seven qualities, 7 varieties in each of the seven. We count day by day, accompanied by a meditation for each quality, starting with cheaed, loving kindness. We count each day by taking stock of our own inner barley. Our inner bearings, our inner compass, that needs to be restored and shored up before we are able to bake new cakes and bring our peace offering at the steps of redemption, a new Israel and Palestine. A free land. How do I count today? by being kind to myself, by recognizing that I want to feel the flood of feelings that sometimes brings me to tears and to greater love. I want to be here, not get up, not have boundaries, not have obligations, not have distinctions. I want to feel myself dissolve. I want to feel the kindness of connection, no distinction between me and us, no distinction between us and them, me and you, you and me. It’s big. It is chesed, loving-kindness. And only by allowing this pool emanating from my primordial being, this blob of formless flow, and outpouring of limitless Love, will I be able to pick myself up tomorrow and practice gevurah in chesed, discipline, strength, and boundaries in love.
