Scripts aren’t only for movies!!
Has the car salesman beat the plaid jacket reputation? The big, bad “screws-you-over” reputation?
In some ways, yes, but in other ways, they’re still fighting it. Car salesmen are sometimes in a psychological battle with the customer - they’re ready to call BS on so much of what you’re telling them. And if that trust is cracked, it could wreck an entire potential deal. You have to do everything in your power to preserve their perception of your integrity and intentions.
The thing is, you can’t take it personally that they don’t trust you. You have to sell yourself as a trustworthy individual, and that means listening to the customer, acknowledging questions, even if you have no intention of answering them right the second. Say, “you know what? That's a great question. I can find out for you, but let me first…” And then get right into your script.
The other thing you need to remember is: they reached out to me because they want this car. You need to constantly redirect their attention to the fact that they came here because they were drawn to this vehicle. Remind them why they wanted it. Many people avoid the phone and in-person conversations with strangers as much as they can, but this person is here, talking to you. So if they're calling you, they've hit a wall - they can't get any more information that they need. Now they need you.
