Important things to remember as hurricane season approaches.

Always carry a key in case you lose power, as your garage door won't open.

Make sure to not lock inside only door locks in case you lose power and can't get in garage door.

Fill up empty milk or tea containers with water and freeze them. If you lose power these will help keep your freezer and refrigerator cold longer.

Fill up your bath tubs with water so if something happens that you have no water, you can force flush your toilets.

Make sure you have spare batteries and flashlights that work. Make sure your battery operated fans are working.

Make sure you have something you can charge your phones with.

If you have a generator, make sure it is working and let it run for 10-15 minutes weekly to make sure it continues working.

Make sure you have bottled water and food that does not need to be cooked before eating.

Make sure you keep your gas cans and propane tanks full.

If you are worried about needing to board up your windows, you need to purchase and prepare prior to a storm as things always sell out if we are expecting a storm.

Simple, but effective, methods to try and deter home break-ins!

Keep your trees and shrubs trimmed near home doors and windows to make entry points visible from a distance.

Have exterior lights on in front and motion sensor in rear.

If you are gone, have strategic interior lights on and maybe a TV playing or Alexa or google devices playing with music on timers. Also, to have a clean car parked in the driveway. These are to give the appearance that someone is home. If you are gone for an extended period, maybe have a friend or family member move car to different spots or maybe let a neighbor park a car in your driveway.

Obviously, you should have an active alarm or even just an unmonitored siren to go off if a door or window is opened or glass is broken. One of a thief's biggest deterrents is loud noises. If you can't afford one, at least put a sign up and window stickers to make them pause and consider whether it is worth the risk.

If cameras are affordable to you, then they are also a fantastic deterrent and obviously can be extremely important in trying to catch the thief or vandal.

Having a dog or dogs, regardless of size, is a huge deterrent as thieves do not like noise to bring attention to them. Even if you don't have a dog, keep a large clean dog water bowl on the back lanai and maybe a dirty tennis ball or dog toy. Again, to make them ponder whether it is worth the risk.

And of course, LOCKS should be locked (and verified by a professional that the strikes are installed properly)!! It is stronly recommended that every door has a deadbolt (that is installed properly)! Believe it or not, a percentage of homes have locks that are almost useless because they have strikes that are not installed correctly. PUTTING A STRIKE PLATE IN THE DOOR FRAMES EXISTING CUT OUT DOES NOT MAKE IT CORRECT!!!!

Security questions to ponder!

1. When you purchased your home, did you rekey it so the previous owners, their relatives, their pet sitter, their maid, their house sitter, their neighbors (your new neighbors) and anyone else who possibly have a key can no longer gain access your home.

2. Are the locks you have on your doors properly installed? Just because they lock does not make them properly installed or secure. Hint, watch my video on this same page. I can promise you won't regret it. If they are not installed correctly against the jamb, they are not secure at all!

3. Do your sliding doors have additional locks on them besides the ones they came with? In Florida, most sliders slide from each side which makes them very vulnerable to break-in. (This is often times the way someone will attempt to break-in since it is usually out of site from the street and a lot of neighbors.)

It is very rare that I do a Security Survey on a home and don't find some security risks and often times I will demonstrate how easy a break-in can actually be.

Why should you rekey a home when you purchase it?

Well, the simple answer is that it is your house so you should decide who has keys to it.

Often times homeowners will issue keys to their neighbors, family members, friends, house cleaning company, pet sitter, house sitter or any number of contractors who may have done work for them. House keys can also be copied at any hardware store, home center or lock shop so even though you may have loved the previous owners if you met them, there are countless other people that may have keys to your new house. Shouldn't you decide who has the keys to your house.

And if you bought a foreclosure then I, another locksmith or countless other service people may already have a key to your home as often times banks or management companies have all of their properties keyed to the same keys.
