Coattails Wine

Coattails is a partnership between the three sons – Jared, Michael, Jr., and Nathan – of Michael G. Etzel, founding partner of Beaux Frères Vineyards.

Etzel, operating partner of Beaux Frères Vineyards in the Ribbon Ridge AVA of Oregon’s Willamette Valley. Raised on the estate until each of the three departed in his own time to Oregon State University, these second-generation winemakers are employing the benefits of learning the craft firsthand as far back as their earliest memories will take them, while also collectively discovering their own v

This week we visited Root Shoot Malting in Loveland CO! They are family run operation with a unique position controlling the entire malting process from seed variety and growth to harvest and final kilning. Malt is arguably the most important ingredient in our beer serving as the foundation but is often overlooked in the hop loving realm we live in. Many breweries aren’t tapping into this avenue, opting to buy standard bulk malt options from their distributor with 2 year expiration dates. Utilizing malt from providers like Root Shoot will inherently add depth and flavor nuance’s to the beers we brew.

Thank you Craig for the tour and the hot steep tasting of your Genie Pale and Vienna malts! We look forward to bringing your malt to the brewhouse and spreading the word out west !

The treasures we found. The 1993 BF which sat untouched in this cellar for 30 years was the star of the night. An amazing experience…

The first batch of Pilsner is bubbling away in the fermenter after a long brew day on Monday. We wanted to share more content with you but the day didn’t go as smoothly as we would have liked, though this is expected working out the kinks on a brand new system.

One of those kinks being a dropped phone in the mash tun trying to set up a time lapse of the mash in process. We are lucky to have phones these days that are waterproof and can take a beating! Expect to see more interesting content on future brews!

Pilsner Highlights:

Malt- 110 Lbs Wayermann Pilsner, 110 Lbs Crisp Haná Heritage, 18 Lbs Wayermann Acidulated
Hops- 5 Lbs mix between Crosby Vista, German Hallertauer Mittelfrüh, German Tettnang
Yeast- Fermentis 34/70 - Weihenstephan
Volume - 5 BBL , 155 Gallons
Potential ABV - 5%
IBU’s- low 20’s

Our take on a German style Pilsner with new world additions. Most classic representations of this beer style are single malt and single hop, and letting the simplicity shine, but we wanted to add a bit of layered complexity with the addition of the Crisp Haná malt and the new Vista hop variety grown locally by Crosby Hops is Woodburn. Expect this beer to be light bodied, snappy, low bitterness on the pallete but monster aromas of citrus, slight dank/pine, and herbal spice.

We expect to can this beer after 6 weeks of lagering post fermentation.

‘22 Vintage in bottle ! The crew hard at work hand dipping. It’s a love-hate relationship dealing with that wax to pop the cork…. Hopefully more love with the added pull string at the top!

291 cases for the ‘22 Horsetail
50 cases for the ‘22 Coattails Sequitur Vineyard

Brew day !

First collaboration batch tomorrow with good friend Johnny Brose of Flora Jane wines and former brewer in Germany’s famous Radeberger brewery! This pic taken in Dresden Germany circa 2011 - Mikey and Nathan(not pictured) visiting Johnny. It was here we discovered the true old world Pilsner beer, something very difficult to replicate in the states…. Simple but assertive malt profile serving the backbone and floral spiciness of the German noble hops up front makes for a very crushable beer, and that we did !

For our first batch we will be brewing a German style Pilsner with new world additions. Stayed tuned for what that means and join us on our brew day tomorrow as we share the experience with you.
