Hamstring Pulls/Strains
Hamstring injuries often occur when sprinting at high speeds. This is due to the hamstring muscles ability to turn on/off (contract & relax). In many cases when the hamstrings turn on and stay is when pull/strain occurs.
More times than not hamstring injuries occur due to an athlete not sprinting (often) above 95% max velocity, too much volume, or fatigue.
Most team sport practices are done at moderate to low speed in comparison to game settings. For most athletes sprinting at least 1 day per week in season and 2-3 days in the offseason will reduce risk of injury to the hamstrings.
Remember to max out the speed as often as possible so that when the reserve is needed the athlete can go from 0-60 safely and efficiently. Sports cars have to be taken out and opened up every now and then to keep the engine healthy, same goes for speed.

One road that is hard to navigate for athletes and parents alike is an athletes career. Especially, in today's climate of information, transfer structure, and NIL. Things can get crazy FAST.
As with anything there are good coaches and bad coaches. The lifespan of most athletes is so short it can feel like luck to get everything right. A few questions I pose when making decisions on where to go and what to do (at any level) are as follows:
1. Does the coach have a track record of caring about his/her players? (If you want to play in college) Does the coach have connections or a way to get you film to self promote.
2. Does the team just win or is there some development at the program?
3. What are your beliefs? Do you want to just be in a winning program, develop, be a big player in that program etc. (simply put do you just want to be on the team or actually have a chance to play)
I have seen careers go up and crash due to misalignment or miscommunication. Be clear on what you want, reverse engineer the process, and work to make it a reality.

I’ve lost more training programs/notes over the years from jump drives to notebooks 🤦🏽♂️ (it happens, thank God for technology). As a trainer (I think) it’s important to have references whether it be a mentor or things you’ve done in the past that worked or didn’t work. When you progress it’s easy to forget more than you’ve learned.
It’s amazing to look back at old notes etc. and get a glimpse of who you were and see what you’ve become. I was 23 when I wrote these questions to myself and now I subconsciously live by it. It’s hard to make your dreams come true. The wins and losses pile up, seems like you lose more than you win. I think to myself often “God, why me? Why do I put myself through this?”
I will wrap up by saying this. If you work, stay consistent, and keep your mind focused on the big picture you will be successful (in your own right). Everyone’s success will not look the same. So, stay down until you come up.

Speed Translation!
If an athlete can hit 20mph max velocity (top speed) that athlete will play around 15-17mph “game speed.” If that athlete does not know their plays or what to do that speed can be slower than “game speed” making the athlete appear average to below average in terms of speed.
The extra 3-5mph are speed reserve used only when needed. (Examples: scoring a long touchdown, fast breaks, chasing someone down etc)

Athletes can experience 5-20% drop in speed from gains attained in the offseason through the athlete’s respective season. Training speed in-season can be tricky, here is my approach to getting the desired outcome.
Account: (these are the things beyond my control that will happen during team activities that I will work around.)
• weight lifting/strength workouts
• team conditioning
• volume of high effort sprints/activities in a given practice
Intent: (what outcome do I want to achieve and how can I make it happen)
• do we need more volume, intensity, or both
• can I get a desired outcome with drills, loaded sprints or free sprints
• if practice runs 2+ hours how much is left in the tank
(Personally) in season levels of importance go as follows: speed, mental prep, skill development, and availability.

With younger athletes effective communication is priority (due to age) this is setting their foundation. Young athletes soak up more information than people may realize so try to get it as right as humanly possible. Make training enjoyable and feed the hunger!

Where do I start? In Dec 2023 I was able to connect with Coach Lindsey & Patrician Academy. Had no clue of where the school was or anything lol. I was a trainer looking for opportunity after taking a leap of faith myself. Since day 1 Coach Lindsey has always been very supportive and made me feel welcomed as well as the community! As summer football training comes to a close next week. We went through our last testing day before camp. All the guys worked hard this summer!
These 2 guys stood at the top of the mountain breaking 18mph respectively 18mph & 19mph 🤯 (Max V). I don’t expect many open field tackles to happen in foot races 😂.
