Day 8, Spring Break 2023-

A lot of hours and too many flight delays and cancellations later, we’re still smiling. Thanks to the help of Nicole, Linda, Clem and Fox World Travel we made it! On the way back to Oshkosh and ready to change the world!

Day 7- Spring Break 2023

Our last full day in a country we have grown to love. We spent the day at Playa Miami enjoying some fun in the sun. We wrapped up tonight with dinner, dancing, and karaoke with many of our new friends.

Goodbyes are hard…until we meet again!

Tomorrow’s Goal: Home!

Day 6, Spring Break 2023-

Today, we started our day with an adventure to the mountains to visit and experience the communities that live in that terrain. To visit the community it requires a 45 minute drive on gravel in dirt roads of which we rode in the back of 4x4 pick up trucks.

Afterwards, we spent our afternoon at a children’s nutrition center in the city where we received a tour and some information about the facility along with having the experience to play with the kids. While heart breaking, we enjoyed every minute we had with the kids and the experience is one that makes us forever grateful.

Lastly, we had dinner and watched a documentary on Berta Cáceres who was an indigenous environmental advocate, who was killed during her activism.

Tomorrow’s challenge: Have fun!

Day 5, Spring Break 2023

Today, we started off souvenir shopping at a local shop, then headed over to OYE to show off our moves💃 We learned popular dances in Honduras & also showed off our original Macarena & our very own Yingyakia was able to show us a traditional Hmong dance!

After a fun morning, we headed over to Mirna’s house for a delicious lunch. After lunch we headed back over to the elementary school to finish our mural project!

Lastly, we went to dinner and had pizza with no marinara sauce and yummy wings. It was hard ending our dinner with some sad goodbyes with the friends we had made from OYE.

Tomorrow’s challenge: Be connected.

Day 4, Spring Break 2023

We started the day with a tour of El Progreso. We first stopped at Las Mercedes Park where a lot of Honduran people congregate. Then, we visited Pela, the local high school in El Progreso. From there, we went to the Municipal Palace where we witnessed the difference in dynamics between power and poverty.

After our tour, we went back to CEB Francisco Morazán, the elementary school we are volunteering at, to continue working on our mural project.

One of the OYE staff, Ángel, showed us how to make homemade baleadas, a traditional Honduran food, at his home for dinner. It was very delicious! The group agreed it was one of our favorite if not the favorite meal of the trip so far.

It was another great day in Honduras, and we’re looking forward to the next.

Tomorrow’s challenge: Be grateful.

Day 3, Spring Break 2023 -

Today, we started off taking a tour of OYE Adelante Jóvenes and had the opportunity to be introduced to the various programs and staff members. Next, we experienced their printing studio and entrepreneurship program.

We spent a majority of the day at a local school where we interacted with some of the OYE scholars to collaborate on what the mural design should be. We also had some fun seeing the classrooms and playing games with the students. Today was filled with a lot of fun, heartwarming moments with the students, and cool memories that will last for a lifetime.

Tomorrow’s challenge: "Look around”

Day 2, Spring Break 2023:

Today, we got the opportunity to connect with the OYE Adelante Jóvenes youth. We did some challenging & introspective Ice-Breakers. After spending some time getting to know one another and learning more about internal/ interpersonal/group communication, we ate lunch together. After lunch we did some more activities.

After our day at OYE, we made our way to the supermarket. We’re learning a lot, including our Spanish skills and how to eat a mango (they shouldn’t be stringy in case you didn’t know) We finished our day eating some delicious tacos at Molcajete’s. We’re looking forward to the week ahead of us!

Tomorrow’s challenge is “keep learning”

Day 1, Spring Break 2023:

How did you spend the last 20 hours? For us, it was a bus, two planes, a train, and a van through two states and two countries with a 100 degree temperature difference.

We made it to Honduras. We‘ve had two delicious meals, played soccer with new OYE Adelante Jóvenes friends, and got to meet our departing colleagues from American University. We can already tell it’s going to be a great week!

Tomorrow’s challenge “Say Yes!”
