5 Tips to Brew the Perfect Cup of Coffee.

I know, I know—this might seem like beginner-level stuff. But trust me, even the most experienced brewers can overlook these fundamental principles. Whether you’re perfecting your first cup or refining your 1000th, these key techniques will elevate your coffee game to the next level. Let’s dive into the essentials every great brewer should master!

1. Start with Fresh, High-Quality Beans
Like a chef’s reliance on fresh ingredients, great coffee begins with fresh beans. Once roasted, coffee beans lose their flavor quickly, so aim to use beans within two weeks of roasting for the best results. Grinding right before brewing also maximizes flavor extraction.

Ratio Tip: For those without a kitchen scale, 1 tablespoon of whole coffee beans weighs roughly 5 grams. A standard brew calls for about 1 to 2 tablespoons of coffee for every 6 ounces of water. So, if you're aiming for a ratio of 15 grams of coffee to 240 ml of water (common for drip coffee), use about 3 tablespoons of coffee. However, a scale is always recommended for precision!

Every morning I try to start my day with a pour-over. There’s something about the deliberate process of making a pour-over coffee that helps me slow down and appreciate the moment. Right now, I’m savoring our Ethiopia Yirgacheffe "Roots."
