The following are updates from Bro. Willie Ritzmann:
As many of you have heard from the news, a devastating landslide has struck the Enga Province in Papua New Guinea, potentially burying over 2,000 people alive. This tragedy has not only claimed numerous lives but also destroyed the main food sources from gardens, leaving the affected families in a dire situation.
Please keep these families in your prayers as they navigate through this immense loss and hardship.
I have been in touch with our brethren from the Good News Christian Church and the Hela Good News Christian Church regarding this disaster. We have 4-5 churches in the Enga Province, which borders the Hela and Southern Highlands Provinces, where we have over 100 churches. Fortunately, our churches in Enga are located near the borders and have not been directly impacted by the landslide. However, many of our members are indirectly affected as they have lost friends and food sources.
We are grateful to the Lord for the safety of our churches and brethren. We will continue to monitor the situation and explore ways our churches can assist those in need in their province.
Update May 30, 2024
Communication from the affected areas is extremely slow due to the lack of power and cell phone connectivity, and the confusion as people search for their loved ones. This evening, I received a message from Brother Rex Epi, the current General Secretary of the Good News Christian Church (GNCC). He informed me that a surviving member from a new GNCC church plant in Mulitaka managed to reach out to him. This church had 16 members, and some of them are now buried alive due to a severe landslide.
Information remains scarce, but efforts are ongoing to gather more details. Brother Rex mentioned that they are collecting clothes and basic necessities for the survivors. Travel to the affected areas is extremely challenging, and people are dispersed.
Brother Rex intends to continue gathering information and plans to organize a trip to deliver aid and relief to the affected area in late June or July. Please remember that in PNG, tasks take much longer than we might be accustomed to, and we need to operate within the cultural context.
If you are convicted to help financially please mark your Donation for Papua New Guinea either through ACCF or the ACCMBC. The PNG Committee will make sure the funds are used as intended.
Please remember to pray for all for all those affected and not just those from the GNCC
