Excited to support an initiative by Cornell Cooperative Extension-Broome County to highlight our local farmers and agricultural industry. You can now check out an entire website dedicated to agriculture and locally-sourced food. Please always consider buying local. You can check this website to see if local farmers are producing what you’re looking for. Supporting local and getting access to high quality, fresh food is a win-win.

I was honored to join Broome County Executive Jason Garnar, and volunteers from the Five Mile Point Fire Company to announce the start of Broome County's Small Community Fund for 2024. Non profit organizations and municipal governments are eligible to apply for grant funding. For example, Five Mile Point Fire has previously been awarded funds for a generator and AED equipment which are vital resources to help save lives.

I attended the unveiling ceremony of the new Veterans memorial in the Village of Windsor this morning. Thank you to the Lions Club and the Village, they did an amazing job on the memorial. It is a great way to honor the men and women who served our country! I’m glad that Chairman Dan J. Reynolds, Chairman & 5th District Legislator, my colleagues on the Broome County Legislature and I were able to help secure funds for the memorial through our Small Community Fund program. Remember to thank our Veterans today!
This morning I joined County ExecutiveJason Garnar Cheryl Insinga for State Supreme Court Justice and a number of people from our community at the Veterans River Park in Kirkwood for the grand opening of the Kirkwood Inspiration Playground. My colleagues on the Broome County Legislature and I worked hard to secure funding to support the playground. All kids deserve to enjoy our community parks and I couldn’t be happier to have an all inclusive, accessible playground in my district. Thank you Councilwoman Katie Legg, the Town of Kirkwood and Friends of Kirkwood Community for all your hard work on this project.

Congratulations to the Deposit Hancock Softball team on winning back-to-back State Championships! I had the opportunity to attend their banquet in Hancock this afternoon with County Executive Jason Garnar and present them with certificates of recognition on behalf of Chairman Dan J. Reynolds, Chairman & 5th District Legislator and the entire Broome County Legislature. I couldn't be more proud to have this team representing Broome and Delaware counties. Good luck next season!
This is sickening. James B. Wales is being considered for release from prison by the NYS Parole Board because of his health. James didn't consider Cheri Lindsey's life and well-being when he murdered her in 1984. James Wales should not be released.
The NYS Parole Board is accepting opinion letters about whether or not James should stay in prison. I urge you to support Cheri Lindsey's family by writing a letter.
You can send your letter here: https://doccs.ny.gov/form/letters-in-support-or-opposition
You'll need to include the full name James B. Wales and DIN # 84C160.
It was a pleasure joining Sheriff Fred Akshar this morning to release details for the new Broome County Sheriff's Office smartphone app. It's free and there is a lot of great information on the app. You can also communicate with the Sheriff's Office and receive real time updates. This is a great tool to stay informed and keep our community safe during emergencies. Download it today on your Android or Apple device!

I enjoyed learning about LifeVac tonight in Deposit.
This is something every park, restaurant, police officer, fire department, EMS squad, every School and every Church should have in place for choking emergencies. Thank you to Hope and Gino Jones for hosting this event tonight
Happy to help. Thank you Deposit Community Park.

A great man was lost this week. Jerry was an individual who walked with a perpetual smile. Always quick with a joke and wit. He was brilliant at his job. He will be so missed.
Jerome "Jerry" Knebel
He was quiet and unassuming, but always engaged, brilliantly funny and as dedicated a person as I have ever met. I got to know Jerome “Jerry” Knebel over the last 30 years while he was working in various positions in Broome County government. He didn’t seek out the spotlight, and in most cases he ran from it...even when he earned it. However, what he did do is serve the people of Broome County in a way that made you admire his commitment.
He most recently served as Broome County's Director of the Office of Management and Budget. To say that he was an essential part of County operations over the years probably doesn’t accurately convey how important he was and how much he will be missed by all of us that worked with him. He was always kind, with a type of dry wit that forced you stop and laugh even during difficult times. Jerry’s demeanor brought people together, he had a unique way getting people to stay focused on resolving problems when the conversations strayed off topic. He was a person that subtly brought out the best in others without bringing any attention to himself.
He hated getting his picture taken, but I snuck up on him in the parking ramp to catch him in this photo…and I’m so glad I did because this is how I will remember him…smiling, joking…happy…
We are all so devastated by his sudden and unexpected passing that it’s forced us all to reexamine the things we think are important.
They say the future is promised to no one…we were reminded with Jerry’s passing that today isn’t promised either... he would want us to stay focused on something positive or what we can learn…so this is how I’m going to honor him and others we have lost.
I’m going to remember that we should laugh every day. I’m going to remember that there’s always time to be kind. I’m going to make sure that my friends and family know they are loved and respected. I’m going to be mindful and purposeful in the words I use because we never know what words may be our last…
Jerry Knebel was loved and respected because he was an inherently good person and he will be greatly missed.
