A year ago, 16-year-old Paulina Gores was left paralyzed after a devastating trampoline accident. Today, she's training for a half-marathon, a testament to her incredible resilience and the life-changing emergency surgery she received in Bristol.

Paulina, a talented gymnast from Germany, suffered a fractured spine and spinal cord injuries during a training session in Somerset. Initially unable to move her limbs, she underwent emergency surgery at Bristol Royal Hospital for Children. Thanks to the skill of the medical team and her own determination, Paulina has made remarkable progress. She can now run 10km and is setting her sights on a half-marathon.

Consultant paediatric neurosurgeon Mike Carter, who performed Paulina's surgery, praised her "calm attitude and stoicism." He emphasized the importance of swift medical intervention and early rehabilitation in cases like Paulina's. Her story is an inspiration to all, proving that even in the face of adversity, the human spirit can triumph.

A new surgical procedure combined with a special bionic leg allows people to walk with much greater control and feel! This is a huge step towards more natural movement for amputees.

Here's the gist:
Surgeons reconnect muscles in the leg to allow them to send signals to the prosthetic limb.
This gives users more control over their prosthetic leg, similar to a natural leg.
Early trials show a 41% increase in walking speed and better obstacle avoidance!

"This is the first full neural control of bionic walking!" - Hyungeun Song, Study Lead Author.
"It feels like having my leg back again!" - Amy Pietrafitta, Study Participant.

What's next?
Researchers are testing the technology outside of labs.
The surgery could be commercially available in 5 years!

A recent study highlights a concerning gender disparity in heart surgery. Women are significantly less likely than men to have a secondary heart condition addressed during a primary cardiac procedure. This can lead to future complications and re-operations.

The research, published in The Journal of Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery, focused on two common scenarios:

Atrial Fibrillation (a-fib): Women with a-fib undergoing bypass or valve replacement surgery were 26% less likely than men to have a-fib treated during the same procedure, despite established guidelines recommending this approach.
Tricuspid Valve Regurgitation: Women receiving mitral valve surgery with a leaking tricuspid valve were less likely (43%) than men (75%) to have the tricuspid valve repaired simultaneously. This can lead to future complications requiring additional surgery.
Why the Disparity?

Researchers suspect surgeons may hold unfounded assumptions about higher risks for women during additional procedures. The study, however, found no difference in mortality rates between genders.

John Nicholas, a 28-year-old Chicago resident, underwent a kidney transplant at Northwestern Medicine while AWAKE! This innovative procedure used a single-spinal anesthesia similar to a C-section, allowing John to feel no pain and be discharged within 24 hours (compared to the typical 2-3 days).

Here's why this is a big deal:
Faster recovery: Discharged in less than a day, potentially making kidney transplants more accessible as out-patient procedures.
Reduced risk: Spinal anesthesia avoids complications associated with general anesthesia, especially for high-risk patients.
Patient empowerment: John was able to interact with the surgical team throughout the procedure, offering a unique experience.

"It was truly life-changing," said John. "I felt no sensation whatsoever." This procedure has the potential to revolutionize kidney transplants, offering a faster, safer, and more empowering experience for patients.

Imagine a brain surgery tool that's 100 times more precise! The tool was developed as part of research of the federal BRAIN Initiative.

Dr. Ahmed Raslan, a neurosurgeon at Oregon Health and Science University who helped develop the groundbreaking new brain-mapping device, said: “This will enable us to do a better job... The clinical grid we use now uses one point of recording every one centimeter. The new grid uses at least 100 points.”

Here's how it works:

A thin, flexible film with tiny sensors is placed on the brain's surface.
This film detects electrical activity in much greater detail than current methods.
Surgeons can use this information to more precisely remove diseased tissue while preserving vital functions like language and memory.

Benefits for Patients & Research:

Safer brain surgeries for patients with tumors or epilepsy.
A clearer picture of the brain's complex functions for researchers.
Potential for future brain-computer interfaces.

The Future of Brain Technology:

This new device is a major leap forward in brain mapping technology. With continued research, it could revolutionize brain surgery and our understanding of the brain itself.

New research suggests ancient Egyptians may have attempted brain cancer surgery over 4,000 years ago!

Researchers from the University of Santiago de Compostela in Spain and the University of Tübingen in Germany analyzed skulls from the era and found evidence of what could be the earliest known case of surgical cancer treatment.

This discovery sheds light on their advanced medical practices. This finding also challenges the belief that cancer is a modern disease. Ancient Egyptians may have had a deeper understanding of cancer than previously thought.

A recent study shows minimally invasive surgery to remove brain clots within 24 hours of a stroke leads to better survival rates and recovery for patients.

The study found that patients who underwent minimally invasive clot removal within 24 hours of experiencing a stroke had significantly better outcomes at 180 days compared to those receiving only standard medical care. This translates to a higher survival rate and improved functionality for stroke patients.

Minimally Invasive Surgery Offers Advantages:

Faster Clot Removal: The minimally invasive approach allows surgeons to access and remove clots more quickly, minimizing brain damage.
Improved Recovery: Early intervention with surgery leads to better chances of a full recovery for stroke patients.
Reduced Hospital Stays: Faster recovery can translate to shorter hospital stays and lower healthcare costs.
