Our Dwarf Orinoco Banana plants are a great addition to our grow dome. They provide shade and yummy sweet 🍌 bananas. I made some sourdough banana zucchini bread for the farmers market this afternoon!

I just got back from a great trip to Belize and picked up my new custom baking island in Denver on my way home. I spent today organizing my space, walking up my sourdough starters and installing my Rofco B40 on its new shelf My new baking spot inspires me and if all goes well I'll be back baking for the farmers market this Thursday. Bees have been a challenge. We lost a hive this winter and I was worried about the remaining hive. It was a spicy hive and I was worried it might be queenless. But thanks to for helping with an inspection and taking photos. It looks like we have baby bees and must have a queen too. I'm inspired.

We had a great 1st Farmers Market yesterday and I'm so grateful to Nick, my trusted assistant for his love and support. I sold out of large rustic loaves and only brought a few baked goods home, which we happily enjoyed for dinner and dessert. Now I'm back at it baking for a delivery to Roots Vintage Food Market.

My 2nd bake in the Rofco B40, my new Belgium bread oven, was better than the first time. I'm baking daily trial runs leading up to the first farmers market this Thursday. It's a learning curve since its an open bake (without a dutch oven). But, I'm going to be able to bake a lot more bread this season, in less time, thanks to this investment. Nick and I are excited to reconnect with old friends and make some new ones. I'll have rustic sourdough, sourdough baguettes, sourdough shokupan, granola, shrubs, fire cider, herby vinegars, Worcestershire, cookies, crackers, and more. Hope you'll stop by and visit.

I got home from San Francisco with a new starter to feed. Now I have 4, Bertha my rye OG starter, Betty my white starter for croissants, baguettes and Shokupan, Sally a new San Francisco starter and Pammy, my pasta madre. All are happy and bubbly and this week's bread looks amazing.

I'm heading to drop off fresh sourdough goodies. Next week I'm taking the week off from baking to visit my daughter in the sourdough capital of the world, San Francisco! #

My baguettes are an extra long fermented sourdough. I started these beauties yesterday, early morning. Unlike my traditional rustic sourdough loaves, there is no added honey (like I traditionally use a touch of). They are open baked, and I use lava rocks for steam. The end result is a healthy, low glycemic food with a beautiful crispy crust and soft nooks and crannies inside. Some studies out of Sardinia have found that eating sourdough can lower the glycemic index of the entire meal by 25%! I'm excited to carry these at the 2024 La Veta Farmers Market.

The La Veta Farmers Market is less than a month away (it starts Thursday May 23 from 3-5pm next to the library) so it's the perfect time to perfect sourdough goodies and try some new things. These sourdough everything pretzels are long fermented and then boiled and baked. They are chewy and satisfying. They are a yummy snack and a perfect mid day treat.

I sometimes let things in the dome go to flower, just because...I love flowers (& seeds)!

Today, I made 2 creams/ointments with local grass fed tallow. First, I made a whipped tallow cream with almond oil, rose & calendula and I made an anti- aging ointment with tallow, Shea butter, cocoa butter, lavender infused sunflower oil and buckthorn oil. These ointments are packed with fatty acids, vitamins and anti-inflammatory properties. I wash my hands all the time (between gardening, animals and baking) coupled with the wind and aging, I need to up my moisturizing game.

Today's sourdough loaves are 100% whole grains and include whole wheat, rye and Rouge De Bordeaux all from Mountain Mama Milling. My usual organic bread flour from Heartland Mills in Kansas has not been available but the bread must go one. These loaves are hearty and nutrient dense.

Today was a delicious day of sweet, salty & in-between. I made homemade marshmallows dipped in dark chocolate and toasted coconut, everything sourdough pretzels & lemon rosemary shortbread with a lemon drizzle and candied rosemary!

Today, I bottled (& sampled) homemade Worcestershire sauce, herby vinegar and tropical (passion fruit & pineapple) shrub...and wowy! I will never go back to store bought Worcestershire. Long infusing and using all organic (many homegrown) ingredients makes a big difference. I also started a new batch of Four Thieves Vinegar, which is packed with antimicrobial properties. Whether you use these vinegars on meats or vegetables, splash into sparkling water, mix with olive oil for a vinegarette, the herbaceous, deep flavors will not disappoint.
