I haven’t shared a story lately, so today I will.

For the past few months, two friends and I have been preparing to open the doors to a gallery on the Santa Fe Plaza. Today, while listening to Tupac, I became emotional. The lyrics were “And I ain’t never did a crime, I ain’t have to do.” When I was younger, my grandmother often picked me up from school early so we could sell her jewelry at a Lake Powell overlook. My grandfather was on the lookout, and he would signal to us when he saw law enforcement officers headed in our direction so we could quickly pack our things before they could see us. We had two choices: to sell our jewelry cheaply to a trading post or at tourist spots with high foot traffic illegally.

So when I heard those lyrics, lyrics I’ve listened to hundreds of times, it hit me. Grandma, I’m opening a gallery in Santa Fe with my two Diné friends. We Diné children, we are taking control; we are sharing our stories, and we are taking control of the narrative. We don’t have to sell our jewelry illegally, shimá sání. We don’t have to sell ourselves short.
