Moms Spectrum Oasis
A community for autism moms. Guidance, mentoring, and encouragement for Moms.
As "May is National Mental Health Awareness Month" draws to a close, I am sharing again my guest appearance on this "Island Treasures" podcast for caregivers hosted by Alison van Schie. This is the abridged, "mini podcast" format for a taste of that episode. In it, I talk about the reality of evaporating support in the face of tough diagnosis--as well as the silver lining of this dark time. Let me know if you want the longer version!

Harsh judgment of ourselves spills over as harsh judgment of others' own vulnerabilities and differences from "the norm" (?!)

It's time to change our view of nonspeakers with severe autism from their being seen as a high-support-need burden to their being recognized as a high-support-need ASSET: https://us02web.zoom.us/rec/share/kHxk1d1EtU8Upx5NIo5JAk0iO4I7m7LB-Bsn8NsSDMgRqSgdwXwBDL9j7daegKkF.bqTo6ZFsEon9Khz3

SURVEY OF PARENTS AND ALLIES OF PEOPLE WITH SEVERE AUTISM: FIRE SAFETY AND RESISTING HELP
Severely autistic people may panic and RESIST HELP in the face of FIRE. They may refuse to leave a burning building, endangering their frantic parents and first responders in the process.
This is NOT defiance; their nervous system is freaking out and immobilizing them, pinned to the spot. All fire safety precautions I have found focus on advance preparation: Smoke alarms, closing doors, fire drill desensitization, and making a plan for emergency exit and meetup outside.
NONE suggests what to do RIGHT THEN when an adult is REFUSING TO LEAVE. Imagine having only THREE minutes to GET OUT and using that precious time pleading futilely with that person while avoiding their defensive blows? Death is often the result!
I have an idea for EMERGENCY USE ONLY, akin to using an Epi-Pen in the event of severe allergy anaphylactic shock or administering an urgent Narcam injection to someone unconscious from an opioid overdose:
Have an EMERGENCY SEDATIVE INJECTION kit ready in the home of a severely autistic person or anyone else likely to resist help. In the event of a fire, the caregiver can administer the shot or supply it to the first responder to use IMMEDIATELY.
What do you think of this idea? Pro or con, and why? What other SOLUTIONS do you have to address this resisting help issue DURING the emergency itself?

People whose severe disabilities lessen their independence require a community designed to meet their high level of need. Group homes are not the answer for everyone; some of our young adults with autism require or prefer a loving congregate care setting to thrive. https://www.nytimes.com/2021/07/04/opinion/disability-funding-medicaid.html?unlocked_article_code=AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAACEIPuomT1JKd6J17Vw1cRCfTTMQmqxCdw_PIxftm3iWna3DKDm4eiOMNAo6B_EGKaat4btEy2zWHVZpPLbkjRfp9i-pSM01mQgik5JuYnZBPawMElbWOZEJklZTcQeJ_tjbwcmiyLOo4yeyy5EyMOTP1DaPe0GkmdwszvcNnfV610XQLwvzAReVyjdN7zu5hUs4hPUoIYCSJvvnoCB5sap7RPlyHtF5AC6wOUirTnNWc97sFbA1ZbFvHR3l_6m88g8hObJJVZO2sak59J7etxOkZGWdqL4y2BpwuR4mylr9is7XFqBfk29P84iKWml4CZfRlmco2DhAA&smid=em-share

For those of us who want a deeper spiritual connection with our nonspeaking autistic kids--yes, even if they have dysregulated behaviors--check out this upcoming 10-week workshop being given by two of our autism mom community members, Malena and Olga.
Get ready to laugh and cry as we join our kids in the realms where they are not voiceless. We already know that their empathy and love are limitless even as their mouths do not follow what their brains implore them to express. This is my second time joining; the first was such a beautiful experience that I am back for more!
My friend Hanna Kok has her own take on an ancient technique to create world peace outside ourselves by looking and taking inspired, truthful action from within ourselves.
Are you brave enough to do it? Are you brave enough to believe that, YES, you ARE powerful enough as an individual to make a difference?
If you hesitate for yourself, would you hesitate to benefit your kids?
And if not now, when?
Thank you, Hanna! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3NhgUepfelA&t=27s

My Story
My primary goal is to support moms whose children have been diagnosed with autism. As a Mom Mentor, I guide, support and empower my clients as they navigate their way through the world of autism.
While each mom's personal process is unique, in the world of autism, all moms share the same journey and can find solace in these three principles: Self-Care. Spirituality. Purpose.
For most moms on the autism journey, finding time to think about their own needs not a top concern. However, what brought me to my current state of balance is my philosophy of Self-Care as a priority. By practicing being good to self, as a mom, you are reenergized, rebalanced and revived for the ultimate betterment of the kids and those who depend on you.
My work with moms is built on the premise that Spirituality makes the journey bearable and gives hope in the darkest times. The comfort of having and being connected to a higher power that is the source of all hope and possibility, helps moms get through the hardest days, the darkest nights and the most painful moments.
It's important to remember that we are never alone or abandoned because we are also always accompanied in our hearts by other moms on this difficult journey.
Although the journey of autism is very child-centered, I work with moms to discover the best parts of themselves. In this process of guiding and helping moms to find their voice, clarify their choices and grow into their strongest selves, I lead them to the flowers through the trees. Moving toward that light, these warriors can open their eyes, minds and hearts while finding their place and Purpose as they move forward.
Overall, my three-pronged approach to mentoring helps Moms gain confidence, strength and reassurance in her abilities as a woman on a noble personal mission.
