On this Father’s Day we would like to share the father-son story of the Bruglers, from Rushsylvania Ohio, who in WWII shared the same foxhole during the early days of the Battle of Iwo Jima.
Garrett McKinley Brugler Sr. served in the U.S. Army in WWI from 1917-19 and as a Navy Seebee during WWII after his son, Garrett Brugler Jr., joined the U.S. Navy 62nd Seabee Battalion in December 1942. Then in March 1945, they both wrote to Mrs. Anna Belle Brugler, wife and mother, while they were in the same foxhole at Iwo Jima.
Before the war, Garrett Sr. became a mechanic and inventor patenting a loading device in 1929 that led to the development of the front-end loader. He was also a member of the American Legion and was inducted into the Ohio Veterans Hall of Fame in 1995.
